In between work trips and a long awaited vacation Im making small progress back at the hangar.

I got as far as I could get by myself with the 4-post but I lucked out on a Saturday when my buddy stopped by, the same one who ordered the lift with me. All the short cuts and tricks were still fresh in his mind so we made quick work of it.

Gave it a few trips up and down and had to test fit the first car under it.

Also there is a new addition to the squadron. I bought a 1994 Porsche 968 which I have been chasing for over a dozen years.

Nice! Looks why we had similar starting points! Other than the 30 cubic yards of parts, trash, and debris I had to remove to see the floors in my hangar lol! Do you have plans for paneling the walls?

Do you have plans for paneling the walls?

Actually Im going start on the walls during my next trip down there. I have a combination of OSB and slatwall that I'll be using. Im starting on the wall closest to the lift and working my way around clockwise.

I need some time to figure out what Im going to do with the utility room by the time I get around to that side of the hangar.

Well Im sincerely glad you asked.

I've been a bit lazy here since I had hoped for some actual sense of completion but I have been working in too many directions to really 'finish' anything yet.

Some of that work has been inside the house. Tearing up old carpeting and vinyl flooring in preparation for tile throughout. I had dreams of it being done for the holidays - but here we are. Two and a half palettes of tile are still occupying the hangar.

Inside the house I think the theme is going to be 'rustic modern' for what thats worth. A cross between contemporary and farmhouse I guess.

We're using planks for the hallways, small bath and kitchen. Heres a couple of them laid out to see how they get along with the wall color.

These 12x24's will be everywhere else. Sortof a concrete look to them, will be in a staggered pattern.

I also had some help and was able to get the first 7 of the ten LED fixtures hung. I like them a lot but I may just end up with a couple of 8ft high intensity fluorescent fixtures around the 2 post lift and work area.

I've been working on the walls in the hangar too, I like the OSB so far and up goes the first pieces of slat wall. Im actually a little further along than these pics show but I just don't have any pics of that last stopping point.

That back wall needs to be framed in so thats where I've stopped. It needs to happen soon since that is the corner where the 2 post lift is to be installed and the walls are holding up that process now.

Previous owner has a furnace mounted but it is propane. The tank is long gone and I don't plan on renting a tank just to heat the hangar a couple odd days per winter in the desert so I'll be pulling that out and offering it on an craigslist or FB Marketplace. I would rather have those extra few sq/ft instead of an unused furnace.

One little Easter egg I may have not mentioned earlier is that the house has a 9' by 19' addition on the opposite side of the hangar. it's currently dubbed the Hobby Room as I plan to finish it out and this will be where I do some things that I may want to stay cleaner than in the hangar, (graphics, printing, embroidery, shirt printing). It's insulated, has electric, and partially finished. Who knows, this may end up being the true man-cave...

What Im really looking forward to is 18 days off for the Christmas / New Years Holidays. Im going to be able to just disappear down there and really get some stuff done. *promise*

I just put down 12x24 tiles in a bathroom, the tip I got was to stagger at 1/3 length intervals instead of 1/2 like in a brick pattern. The reasoning is that tiles that long can have some cup or warp to them and if your putting the end of a tile one row next to the middle of the tile in the next row you can see the worst of the height differences. The end of one next to 1/3 of the next row hides the cupping better.

I also had really good luck with the tile leveling clips and wedges for getting it to come out nice with out a lot of effort getting the tiles at the same height by hand. It was my first time using them and was totally worth it.

Either way looking good, going to look nice!

Here's some post-holiday updates. I was off for 18 days so I got to spend a fair around of time down at the hangar.

I got my back wall framed out, added some bracing for the TV mount. I should have taken a pic after it was all there because this pic might be a bit of a head-scratcher.

Utilizing the 4-post lift as scaffolding worked pretty well, I had some help that day so the three of us were able to move the lift on its casters and keep a steady flow of OSB headed to the top row.

The squad had to sit outside in the cold all day. Poor things...

I got the slat wall finished up on the back wall. This is where the L-shaped configuration of tool boxes and work benches will live. The 2-post lift will be placed in this corner at a 45º angle. That exposed side will have a hinged door to provide access to the water shutoff for the swamp cooler.

Slowly transitioning all the cars down, benches, tools, and lift will follow shortly.

I sold the propane furnace locally on Facebook so I recovered a few more square feet right where I could use some.

I had a fellow come grab the remaining cabinets from the utility room. I need some ideas to help decide how I can best use this room. It has a sink, washer/dryer hookup, and 220v. It's about 80 sq/ft.

I need to get busy in the hobby room as well. First will be replacing the exterior door which was second-hand when installed and never sealed up too well. This room needs to stay pretty clean since there will be some fairly sensitive equip in there.

It's crunch time. I have to be out of the rented shop by the end of the month so Im trying to manage clutter as I bring everything down.

This weekend I worked on a new pre hung steel door for the hobby room. It was looking pretty grim as the old mess of a door came out but it ended up going in pretty well. Few shims here and there and new handles / hardware and it's good to go.

Some of the shoddy electrical can be seen in the pic which I'll be learning (to) fix soon as I finish the walls in the hobby room.

Late Saturday night I was creepin' thru FB Marketplace and found these steel parts bins locally. Heres to my entry into the vintage tool / cabinet world. It's going to be a pretty ambitious venture to restore all-those-bins but these were perfect for my needs.

Knew a guy in the UK who had an Integrale back in '91 that was far from stock. First time I was in it we were hurtling down some back road when he said "Don't worry about being sideways when we get to this bridge, we'll be facing the right direction when we land".
He was right, but that still didn't stop me & the other two passengers from yelling when he did it again in the opposite direction after a pub lunch...
Always liked them since that day... it was the same day I learned to be wary of getting into cars driven by fighter pilots...

The Integrale is probably my favorite car. It's a very special feeling to drive it, Im very thankful to have one. Back when you were getting that ride I was just dreaming of another car we-didnt-get-in-the-US.

Dykstra - I have to admit, hangar life is kinda fun. Especially the look in people's faces when you tell them about it. Most have more grand visions than my humble place.

So this update takes us back inside the house. We knocked out 3/4 of the tile this weekend, all three bedrooms, one bath, hallway, and entry. It was the first tile job I had a hand in, but my friend got way more than he bargained for as my slab was one of the worst he'd seen. A days worth of grinding held up progress. I'll have some grout work to finish up in the coming weekend(s) but the rest of floors (master bath, kitchen, living room) will be on hold for another month or two until he gets another break in the action to come down again.

One thing we settled on is that Im loving the planks, and they just happen to be easier to work with on the wavy slab - so I'll be buying another couple hundred sf of plank for the living room. This will leave me an excess of the 12x24 but I have a couple ideas as to where to use it anyway.

Im pretty excited as now I can put a few rooms back together and bring some furniture down - and start spending nights and weekends instead of driving back and forth.

Great project and space. Couple of questions if i can?

How do you get a plane from the hanger to the runway? Just taxi down the road?
And what are those huge circles just outside town?

Yes that's how it's done. We have plenty of them here in Southeast, just taxi down your driveway then down the street over on the runway then off you go. I would say most just have a hangar at the back of the lot that faces the runway... interferes with traffic a lot less that way.

Thats crazy. They would lock you up here if you drove a plane down the road.

Hey Roger, these communities are scattered around the States. I went to one with my dad as a wee laddie in the Midwest, never thought I’d end up in one. It’s a pretty cool spot and there are some interesting folks and planes in here. Some guys fly to get lunch a few towns over, some restore vintage planes. MY neighbor at the end of the street runs a shooting range up in the hills where people shoot a .50cal out of their helicopter. ...that’s like America: Level 10 lol

The streets are active taxiways and there is only one spot where auto traffic can cross the runway - very south end.

BTW the circles you see on satellite are the sod farms just the other side of the California border...

I'm half a mile from a high end airpark( Stellar in Chandler ) and have been in a few fantastic hangars there. I would love to have that kind of space.

When i first started reading i thought it was really remote, but vegas is only the other side of the hill! Certainly seems like a great spot.

Saw the helicopter shooting guys on the internet. As you say, very America!!!!

Still cant get my head round the planes on roads. Mad!

But mainly i just love the space you guys have, and empty roads. The average speed calc in my maloo is 29mph!!! Spend my life stationaryin traffic. Way to overcroweded on our little island

I had never heard of such a thing either until recently when I looked up John Travolta's mansion.

I'm not aware of any such communities in Canada. Here, we just call it a "cottage"

When you move into an airpark community you have to be really careful, as you can end up going from a car nut to a plane nut... it's not that far a stretch...

I had this huge idea once for a floatplane hangar (because it's well known hangared planes weather better than ones left in the open)... build the walls on sealed 85 gallon overpack drums as a floating foundation, so the hangar (like the plane) would bob up and down with the water level... unfortunately the cottage on the lake never materialized, but... well... you know.

This type of community isn't a thing where I live, so it's really cool to see! Have you got any updates?

Is there any moment of the day when cars aren't banned from the runway and you can go out and... test them for a little bit?

I can't believe where the time goes, although lots has happened.

BTW - there is NO time when cars aren't banned on the runway lol.

In the last year I bought another place in Vegas as my normal (?) house so that took up a good deal of time and my projects at the hangar suffered. Almost forgot about a knee surgery mixed in there too. Oh, and the 130 nights away from home supporting my day job.

Starting with the house in town, it's a 70's modern. Quite unique in an older part of town in a neighborhood of horse properties. So yea, right in Las Vegas proper there are areas where people still keep and ride their horses, Wild West out here... Best thing - Im on a half acre corner lot. Love it.

That said, it has a 2 1/2 car garage that is actually 70's-car deep. The 968 was lost in there.

I had a longer-than-I'd-like-to-admit project come back from paint and I'll be looking forward to piecing it back together this spring.

I came up with a lift solution after much deliberation as to trusting my concrete for a 2-post lift. I found the specs on the concrete and it was just barely under what was being suggested for a minimum. Also my placement was going to be an issue too. A 2 post lift was going to sit on two different grades, one closest to the wall perfectly flat, and the other post on the part where it begins a very gentle slope towards the rear roll up door.

The single post lift satisfied many needs for now. It gets me back working on cars again and it saves an easy 3-4 feet in width overall compared to a 2 post. It takes a little more time to get a car positioned on it but for a hobby level guy it's worth it for me. It's also nice to think I can roll this lift anywhere in the hangar and work on a car where it's staged, as well as lifting a car on the driveway and perhaps power washing the undersides.

Also, cars have gone and additions have been added.

Here's my first Japanese classic, freshly restored by a good friend that specializes in early Z cars. He called me one day about a year and a half ago with some excitement in his voice. "I just bought you your first Z car" he said. I took a ride over with little expectation and found a very sad looking metallic brown 280 with an automatic trans that had been sitting in the desert sun for probably decades. Up side was that it was completely rust free, straight, and a great starting point for a 100% nut and bolt restoration including a 5-speed swap.

This will be a better year, I keep telling myself that. So hopefully I can keep some progress and updates coming along regularly.

Made a lucky score on a random thrift shop visit today. They had a **** load of U-Line bins priced at 4 for 99cents so I grabbed 10 bux worth. They came out of a pretty clean environment, can tell they weren't holding nuts and bolts like they are about to.

That is all. Doesn't take too much to excite me sometimes.
