Longer garage door to soon spring?

I found a replacement torsion spring that is exactly the same as what I current have on there (ID and wire size) except the new one is two inches longer. From what I understand is longer springs will last longer and only need to be wound more to work the same the original shorter spring. Am I understanding this correctly?

Yes, that can work.

The pros won't do it that way, as they want to count turns and have both sides balanced. With a mis-matched spring, it is more difficult to balance.
