I went to tech school for electric trades but this seems odd to me. The utility company says my 320 amp meter base will power 2 200 amp panels. So i have a 320 amp meter that feeds a 200 amp disconect that then feeds a 100 amp shop service and a 200 amp house service. So am i pulling too much through my service disconect. The way i see it i only have 200 amps of available power for the house and shop when i should have 300 amps.

Now heres the curve ball. I want to redo the shop service and make it a 200 amp also. Will my meter have a 2 sets of lugs so i can feed 2 service disconects. I will be replacing the 2/0 wire to the shop and the panel in the shop. Please help me.
So in the end i want to keep the 200 amp disconect for the house. And then add another seperate 200 amp service disconect for the shop.
Thanks Chuck

I'd chat with the POCO- they will know if the meter can be double lugged. You'll have to contact them anyway to have the meter pulled to rewire the service. Might touch base with your local inspector also.

Looks like a plan to me...

320 meterbases usually come with teardrop lugs made for 2 wires.

in the existing situation, what protects the 100 amp feeder?

the way you want to do it is how it should be. Pull a permit, coordinate with poco, and you should be good to go.

Your second drawing is similar to what I have. I have a Square D CU12L400cb meter base/box. It came with one 200A breaker installed. It has a slot for a second 200A built in. So the box does what you need. In addition it has 8 slots for other breakers (qd?) that I use for outside power and the well house. I think there might be a picture of it in my build thread below. Also at

One other snag I ran into was the POCO wanting to know exactly what I was going to run that required 200A to the shop. I think that they were trying to size the feed wires and make sure that they had enough transformer.

I dont have building permits to pull. Its no mans land out here. There is a 100 amp breaker inside of the service disconect that is there now. The disconect has spots for more breakers but if i do that i will still be pulling more than 200 amps through my 200 amp disconect unless its ment for that. I dont understand why they would even put a spot for breakers when anything you add will over do it.

Just so you know, 2/0 won't cut it for 200 amps. You need 3/0 copper or 4/0 aluminum for a true 200 amp feed (or larger if it's a long run and voltage drop is an issue).

does that 'disconnect' have a main breaker? Sounds like a feedthrough panel. Pretty common, has input from the meter, main breaker, feedthrough lugs that go to the house subpanel, and 4 or 8 breaker spaces for smaller feeders to shop, outdoor lights and receptacles, pool, etc.

Just because you got the big breakers doesnt mean everything you own and then some will be on at once. Lots of 200A panels have 600A of breakers installed.
