So this is my first post here, I am no stranger to quality tools, but am starting to build up a collection. I am an equipment operator and 3rd generation auto mechanic.

So I work a few days a week at a municipal garbage drop off center, and occasionally comb thru the rubbish and I found these tools in the matter of a few weeks of each other. I just can't believe what people will throw away sometimes! The ratchets are new replacements because the ones I found looked like they sat in a snowbank for a season and were seized up.

You might get some flak here for warrantying the rusty garbage-can ratchets, but otherwise I applaud your scrounging. Hope you stick around!

I know what you mean... I was at the local refuse collection point and was dumping off some metal in the metal only bin.... All scattered on the floor was about 30 craftsman sockets.... I asked the guy working there if he had any issues with me taking them.... He said "go ahead, I don't care"... Got some free sockets that day... (I am always running short)....

How could those end up in the trash? Pissed off wife?.

One man's garbage is another man's treasure. Think of it: A person with no mechanical inclination finds themselves in possession of some tools that have rust on them. Doesn't know a Snap On from a snapdragon. The tools have no value to them, so, obviously, they must be worthless. Into the trash they go...

Couldn't you order new insides for those seized up?

I use penetrating oil as it gets some of the rust off and lubricates. Someone mentioned using a tumbler - the kind used for ammo brass casing and ground walnuts. When I gather funds, gonna buy one. Also want to try a ultrasonic cleaner.

If you have tools that are rusty or sized up you can use the electric rust removal method to get them clean and moving freely. Just don't use it on chrome plated items. It will take the chrome off. I use it when I find "new" old tools. I live on a main highway and find stuff occasionally. I found a nice set of klein linesmans plyers that were almost new. I also find sockets on occasion. As far as dumpsters and such I found a nice old antique radio once when I use to work on them as a hobby. I found other stuff as well. I have found table saws and a nice dolly at work in the dumpster. The table saw was bad but I gave the stand to a guy who needed one and I am going to use the fence and rails to make my bandsaw have a larger top. If it wasn't for other people garbage I wouldn't have half my tools. You would be surprised at how many tools can be fixed for less than ten bucks of parts and less than an hour.
