Looking at $1000ish scan tools.

Alright, I have a old Modis Ultra that is updated as much as it can be that's started to be real flakey, but suspect it could be a couple of the personality keys. I also have an OTC Genisys 5.0 as well. I'm just a home gamer, but I do flip cars pretty often, and occasionally work on a friend's and family's cars.

I'm looking for a more modern scan tool in the thousand-ish dollar range. I've been looking at new Launches and new Autels. I've also seen several Marco Maximus 2.0s, which I understand are rebadged Launch. I've also seen several mostly updated Solus Edges.

I think I'm leaning towards the Solid Edge or some version of the Launch x431 Pro. A wireless dongle is appealing.

I think I'm going to move to a computer based lab scope in the future. The Modis freezes more often than not when using the scope.

What would you buy in that price range?

Page two has my super-short review of the Autel 906.

My diag setup is: Currently updated Autel 906, 2009 updated gen-1 modis, U-scope for quick checks, Pico 4425 for heavy lifting.

Not sure how much you use guided component tester, but if you don't have readily available service info you almost need a snap-on tool for wiring diagrams, unless you're very confident running on the fly. New personality keys are about $25 each FWIW. Yes they still make them, I just ordered some for my Modis.

If you skip "authorized venders" you can get a 906 in your price range. I'd be hunting craigslist and the like for a more modern modis. Usually the Solus in my area aren't that much cheaper, and since you already own one you don't even need to buy one with the scope attachments.

I have an Autel DS808, it does lots of stuff, Bidirectional, etc. etc. It was just over CAD $1000 when I bought it in the spring. It works well on my 2018 Volvo, it can turn on the cooling fan, the door panel lights and the electronic parking brake, to name some of the things I've tried.

I don't use the guided component tests often, but the pin-out and theory of operation information is useful because I generally only pay for service info per vehicle with AllData or Mitchell DIY.

I've been looking for a modern Modis in that price range, but there's nothing local. If I'm willing to drive a few hours, I can find some in that $1.5k range. Which I may be willing to do.

I have an IDS clone I use for Fords, so I'm covered there.

I'm thinking I may just hold out for a newer Modis to pop up locally, or an Autel at a price I can't refuse.

Does anyone know if the Matco Maximus has service info built-in if you don't keep it up to date or pay for subscriptions?
