Thinking about adding a lean to off my barn. what is the typical best way to build. barn is 16x36 and I have 10 ft walls. roof is at a 4/12 pitch. my main goal is to be able to fit my chevy silverado under it. I was thinking about going out an additional 12 ft . Not sure about enclosing it all in yet.

Just from the picture, it looks to me like you'd need to continue the existing roofline. If you flatten out, you might have snow load issues.

Is the framing visible inside the building?

Yes it is visable. i was thinking I could just pull the steel off the side and build off the header with enough slope to not have any snow issues etc. I'm not a professional builder though.

Its not that hard to do but I would also be concerned about snow load in Michigan (I grew up in Battle Creek where we got lake effect snow) so you would need to make it pretty beefy if your going out a ways.

On my 24'x32' I built a lean to off one side to match the existing roof slope (also a 4/12 pitch) and with the 10 foot side walls I was able to get enough room to park my Kubota tractor underneath it without dropping the ROPS and I put it out 8 feet. Your probably looking at 10 feet or so with less of a pitch so plan accordingly.

I am currently getting ready to close in the lean to to better protect the tractor and I am enclosing the last 6 feet or so for my compressor and some much needed storage...I wish I had gone out further even if I had to change the lean to roof pitch.

Well I made it though last winter... lol :willy_nil I do have a roof rake and I make it a point to get snow off the roof on my barn and house. I guess I am just trying to have my cake and eat it too. If continuing the existing roof is what I need to do then that's prob what I'll end up doing.

It seems like the more money you try and save in the beginning you just turn around and spend it at the end... lol

The first picture goes out 16 Ft. from a 14 foot eve on a 4/12 roof and the second one goes ten ft. from a 12 ft. eve on a 5/12 roof still left room to walk under the out side with out ducking, the snow slides off every afternoon.

What about extending the exsisting roof forward enough to cover your truck? Sort of a car port in front of your overhead door? That way, when you enclose the car port later, you've actually added to the overall size of the shop. Or, do you need frequent access to this door even when your truck is parked?
