Ihave that set, I bought it from Cripe when they had them for $76 (I know I stole it!). I've used them now for almost two years with my Matco MUC108 10.8 V impact wrench and no problems at all. Great set, I regret not buying more of them when they were availble.

Any other options out there? I just want to make sure to get the best bang for my buck. Any American made kits?

My question is why would you need impact sockets? I can't think of any application where I'd use 1/4" drive and need the additional strength of impact sockets.

I have that Gearwrench master set, love it. Really great set for the money. Amazon will be the cheapest you will find it.

I'd go for that sunex set if you weren't going for swivels, or the gearwrench set if you wanted swivels. I cant tell you if you'll need swivels or not. Both are taiwain, I doubt you'll find a USA set for a similiar price.

Gearwrench also has a 48-piece set. That would be my personal preference, but only out of brand loyalty and OCD-ness of wanting to have my sockets match. Nothing wrong with Sunex either.

Can't beat the Gearwrench set with the swivels for value, though to be honest I'm a snob for pinless swivels. But it's just that, if I were on a budget and needed them, I'd settle. Just the 8-piece Matco pinless set (7-15mm, skips 9mm) is over $300.

Sunex,takes a long time to get a replacement when they break.Had this with a broken 18mm impact swivel a few years ago.I have one Sunex set when they were made in Japan so far.The chrome 1/4 drive sockets tend to wear out quickly when on a 1/4 air ratchet or impact real easy.

It's not what you think probably.

A lot of industrial or assembly lines use air operated impact drivers for repetitive fasteners. Also their maintenance workers use air operated impacts for a lot of tasks. They are required to use impact sockets on air tools per OSHA.

I worked at a steel plant for a little while and everyone had all impact sockets. We were not allowed to bring in chrome sockets because someone might accidentally use one on an impact.

it's not the torque it is the impact. hand (chrome or otherwise) and impact sockets differ in material and construction. hand sockets see a steady pressure and are designed for it. impact sockets see a a rapid application and release of pressure or impact. that type of application plays havoc on chrome and the thinner material seen on hand sockets.

even in 1/4 drive there is a difference in design and material.

Same pieces, but not a direct re-badge. Larger sockets have the stepped part of the female end, the Gearwrench sockets are straight.

I have the big GW set, and it's my daily use set with my M12 1/4" impact wrench. Worth every damn penny, the swivel sockets are excellent.

I also have the sunex set and I really like the sockets. I bought the 3/8 drive set too. The only complaint I have is that the case is tough to open.

That's what I figured. I always search google first but usually the threads are at least a couple years old. Might as well ask if anything changed instead of starting a new thread and getting a link as the first reply.
