I'm looking for a 240 volt construction heater to heat my garage from time to time when I need to do some work in the garage in winter months. It wont be used on a daily basis. My garage has 10 foot celings and has sheetrock on the inside, but no insulation. I have 240 volt, with a 50 amp breaker. Outdoor temps in the mornings are in the teens for the better part of the winter.

This unit from DeWalt caught my eye. Is it any good? What other suggestions do you have?

Looks like the Cadillac of electric construction heaters. It'll be as good as you can get with that type of heater. It would be really nice if you could find a way to use a remote thermostat as it would result in much more consistent temp control.

You may not like the power bill tho. at 10kw and 15 cents per KWH it'll cost you $1.50/hr to run assuming it's on non-stop.

Believe the mr. Heater brand is made in the USA. If your going to Buy top end
I'd look at USA made.

Why do you need a $500+ unit for 7.5kW?

The same capacity is <$200 here

I don't see why the portability is a big deal...with the #8 awg wiring might as well make it stationary...

I bought a 5000 watt model similar to that one. The fan is very weak, for my use, I really needed a stronger fan. Anybody else experience this. This is the one I bought:

Matt_i and OKDart,

I've used a similar heater for years in my attached garage. It was originally made my Dayton but now is under the Fahrenheat label:

I think it does a pretty good job. Fan is adequate. notice about a $30/ month change in my bill.

Some of the ones linked above that look similar but are at $100 or less worry me about quality. I doubt they are built as well, but who knows.

Rural King is running a special on heaters at a fraction of the cost of the ones posted. There is always the possibility of a fraction of the quality as well. If I had a 220V circuit in my garage I would buy a pair of these for occasional use.

I'm still researching but this is the one I've landed on.
$111.00 shipped.

I have that one. I did get it while it was 102.00 though. Works pretty decent in my 24x32 to maintain the temp for while I shutdown the 100k torpedo.

Just note that running for extended periods will cost you some money. I used almost 4 times my normal kWh for the day. This was during the 8 hr run time. Based on the runtime it costs about $11.00 to run for 8 hrs. Which Isn't bad, but isn't great. Spend more money on insulation. Wish I had, but it is, what it is.

Max btu's for the dollar, great for quickly warming up a frozen garage to work in it.

Fumes aren't bad at all when you use kerosene

I like them because if you ever lose heat in your house, put it in the basement and you have a backup emergency heat source.

Just make sure you have CO, Smoke detectors, Home owners and Life Insurance paid up and you don't care what happens to yourself or family. AKA this is terrible advise.

I'm looking at something really similar, how often do you run it? Is your garage insulated? Do you keep it at a certain temp?

That's what I use. Put a cord on it and use the hanger bracket as a carry handle.

That's not a bad idea. The problem with all of these ceiling mounted units is that my ceiling is probably 11 or 12 feet high, not the 10 feet I originally posted. If I mount a heater on the ceiling I am always going to have to pull out the step ladder to reach the on switch or the thermostat setting.

I run it all winter long with a setting on the dial that corresponds to about 55*F. The garage is insulated. So to me, $30/month isn't bad.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I'm going to keep mine even lower I think, 40ish degrees. My garage will only be about R16 all the way around but I'm hoping it does the trick without costing an arm and a leg.

I made my mount to drop mine down today. Took it from around 10 ft
Something to 9ft.
