Look and see if Kastar makes one, and see if you can find a that (possibly rebadged) somewhere. There was a discussion quite while back and it was mentioned that Kastar made (at the time) the same metric/SAE bolt/nut rethreading kit sold by SnapOn and Sears - you can imagine the price difference. I would not at all be surprised if the Matco version is really a rebadged Kastar kit with a much higher price

Kythri beat me to the punch - I see that the kit he links to is made by Kastar

Did Craftsman sell this specific kit? I think some of the rethread dies in this are larger than what the Craftsman kit has/had in it (thought, I could be wrong).

Edit: Yup, the kit in the OP does have significantly bigger dies.

KAS972 (40-piece SAE/Metric Thread Restorer Kit, and sold under many names, including Craftsman) only goes up to 5/8"-11 in coarse SAE, 5/8"-18 in fine SAE and M12-1.2 in Metric

KAS971 (48-piece SAE/Metric Thread Restorer Kit, and sold under many names, including Craftsman) only goes up to the same SAE sizes as above, but M14-1.50 in Metric.

KAS2599 (the OEM for the Matco copy in OP's post) goes all the way up to 1"-14 in SAE and M27-2.00 in metric.

I just dug it out of bottom drawer of my tool.

But no where does it say Craftsman :dunno:

But I do assume I did get it from Sears though I could be mistaken about that since I have had it for decades now since there is no longer any label on the red box (which btw is almost identical the to the smaller thread chaser set)

Other than that I wouldn't know where I would have purchased it. I don't own ANY tool truck branded stuff and Sears is where I had purchased most everything I own tap dies etc.

Its the 20pc set made in USA though.

I was referring to post #9, that is not a Craftsman kit, but the Kastar sold by Sears.

That is definitely correct. And now I believe that's how it was sold even in the catalog and there never was an actual Craftsman branded one, like I had mistakenly said it was. Mine has 1998 date on the included Dorman paperwork...a list of axle thread by vehicle.

Waay out of date now

I Have both sets they can’t be beat. they are also sold under the Lang tool brand...

Lang and Kastar combine or something like that.

The grey one in the op’s pic is the same case as the new Lang version.

Lang is Kastar. They renamed the company after their family name (German). Pronounced like "long" for anyone that cares.

Most people are gonna know this, but the Lang Kastar kit is mostly for front wheel drive vehicles (and may even help you on the REAR axles of front wheel drives like my old '81 Audi 4k aka VW Fox).

But for spindles of trucks and four wheel drive vehicles these dies are too small. I'm not aware of a kit that would encompass spindles like 14b, Sterling/Visteon 10.25/10.5, D44/60/70. It also won't help you on the unit bearing D44 fronts of 2nd gen Rams.

For these I just order piece-meal from a machinist supply or Amazon

Here's a thread I started about 2nd gen Rams; according to my notes the stub shafts are 1-1/8 - 18
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348843

edit: I am NOT poo-pooing the kit discussed in this thread - I own it and as a machinist believe in having every possible die or thread restorer I can reasonably, realistically obtain/afford/collect

I had the split dies from esco. You put them on the good part of the thread and back them off.

Or, just don’t beat the **** out of the shaft with a metal hammer

I was looking at wheel stud rethread kits and found some on ebay that are split dies, much better IMO than say standard dies

For large threads, rear axles, forklifts and equipment, I use this OTC thread chaser:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002SRGV6/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I used it on a 55mm Nissan forklift drive axle spindle and it saved more than the day, probably the month.
