Looking for a large fan blade, maybe 4 feet across. All I need is the blade, shaft of some sort. Dont need a working motor. Where would I find such an item?

I'd suggest getting in touch with a local HVAC company that deals with industrial sized units.

If you're out in farm country, I remember seeing large fans on chicken coops for ventilation.

Or, if this isn't a rush and you want it cheap, get friendly with a local demo company and see if they're tearing down an old warehouse or factory in the near future...

I agree on the chicken farm idea.
A lot of them are going through an upgrade cycle where the big fans on the ends of the buildings are being replaced for some reason.

Paint room exhaust fan. Ask your local automotive paint jobber about any paint booth upgrades that they or someone else is doing, get the used stuff for scrap price...

Ceiling fans are not as simple as some think. The load on the bearings is unique and needs an appropriate solution. A 4' fan is nothing but a 48" fan available for damn near nothing at a big box store. You can easily get it for under $50, probably less than $40 if you do not want a light.

Okay, that was about 25 minutes well spent.

Precisely what I was expecting, lots of people well-versed in how to operate machinery to cut and shape wood, with lots of exposed cutters and blades, and almost no safety equipment you'd see today. Not even goggles/glasses. I especially liked the four pairs of bare hands passing wood over a jointer that had at least a three foot bed.

Times were so different back then, and I won't say it was better or worse. The big difference is responsibility and attention I guess. I'd love to get my hands on some of that close-grained sitka spruce they were using. They don't make wood like that anymore!

I think some of you are missing a key point- he's looking for a 4 foot blade meaning a little over an 8 foot diameter fan.
