Hey guys, looking for a cheap used hand planer. I attended a canoe paddle making class and need a hand plane for home use. Preferably an old standley model on the smaller side.

I've got an old one just like that, but a few inches longer,it's been painted red. I'd sell it for $25.00+ shipping,
The funny thing is I once used it to make a canoe paddle also. I cut it from a yellow poplar board. I've since used it to shave a piece of sheetrock so it's covered in sheetrock dust, and probably needs the blade honed a bit, but it's a solily built tool.

I'll check tomorrow and see what I've got that would work for ya. That's a size No3 bench/smooth plane and they're readily available, the shaves come in sizes & shapes but a single adjust straight blade will serve your purposes.

You also need a block plane. I've got several and will pass one along for $10 shipped.

Would a block plane work for this application? We only used the hand plane and thespoke shave. A block plane looks confusing to me because it has no rear handle to hold on to.

A block plan is kinda like the shave in that it's more of a finish tool. You could use the bench plane for major material removal and the shave or block plane for finish work.

Think of a block plane as a much more precise spoke shave. Easy to learn to use. You can tell how much I like them, because I've got ten or more.
