Currently looking for a compressor for christmas for myself..

What I'm looking for:

Single Stage Oiled
Must be Portable
120/240 Dual voltage would be nice
I am indifferent with a horizontal or vertical tank... both have positives.
Would love to find one Made in the USA, but thats becoming harder and harder :(

Will be using with air tools (mainly air ratchet and 1/2 impact.. will also see air nailer use, not alot, and anything in the size i want this is not an issue)

Here are the ones I have found so far..

Porter Cable C5512
http://www.deltaportercable.com/Products/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=22864

Ingersoll Rand P1.5IU-A9 (Garage Mate)
http://www.ingersollrandproducts.com/IS/Product.aspx-am_en-12949

Craftsman 19541
http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10...cName=Equipment&sName=Compressors+&+Air+Tools

Campbell Hausfield VT6271
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200377421_200377421

This craftsman is questionable.. but its oil free.. which I am not sold on..

Which one would you guys buy, and why?.

none. get this one:

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/..._200396620?cm_sp=RVC-_-Search Page-_-Products

that one goes under many different names. (morgan, cobalt, black max, coleman, sanborn, industrial air, powermate......) its very nice. works awesome, good power, fair sound, fills from 0 to 155 psi in 7 minutes on the dot.

they make a 30 gallon version of that on wheels and an 80 gallon version.

(i may be mistaken but i think the old blue point compressor was the same thing in the 60 gallon version?)

1) not portable
2) not dual voltage

In other words, thats nothing like what I am looking for :lol_hitti

But the 30 gallon would probably be ok, if it suited the other qualfications..

this one?

I had a very similar Campbell Hausfeld, it was a great compressor, out of your list that's the one I would get.

my bad. i didn't look at the examples or that it needed to be portable (assuming wheels were enough).

being that it has to be portable, your options are drastically cut down because pump size and tank volume play a big roll with the tools you listed you were going to use

One thing I did not notice was the cfm for CH or IR on the links you provided, that's a real important consideration.

I'm not saying it needs to be COMPLETELY portable.. but i think the 30 gallon is probably a little big for 1) what i will be doing.. and 2) too big to move reasonably..

I am like you with what I am looking for. After lots of research on this site under the general talk section I am looking at the Craftsman Pro- horizontal and the Kobalt- vertial but also portable. Both 30 gallon units at $400-470.

Lots have the Husky unit too and seem to like it but I beleive it is noisier than the above mentioned. Same price though.

smaller comrpessors come with smaller pumps and motors. 30 gallon is the lowest I will go, any lower then you have to look harder for psi max and ratings for specific tools

Those wanting CFM specs..

Porter Cable:
•Air Delivery @ 40 PSI ISO1217: 7.2 SCFM
•Air Delivery @ 90 PSI ISO1217: 5.9 SCFM

Ingersoll Rand
Capacity @ 90 psi / 135 psi (cfm) 5.2 / 4.6

Craftsman Pro
SCFM Delivery At 40 psi: 7.4 SCFM
SCFM Delivery At 90 psi: 5.8 SCFM

Couldn't find specs on the CH.. but I think thats prol over my budget.

I agree, It's worth spending the extra money now, you'll be sorry later if you don't. My buddy bought one of those store brand ones with a large tank and he hates it. The thing runs constantly and can't keep up, he has to sit there waiting for the tank to fill up.

Is the 135 PSI Max an issue?

How long does it take to fill?

Any issues with a standard 20amp house fuse?

I got the 25 gallon craftsman professional for christmas. Its great! Its very quiet, and fills up pretty quick. It runs my IR 1/2 impact perfectly, as well as my air ratchets and whatever else i need. Its the horizontal one, 150psi. The one you listed in your first post.

I originally had the 12 gallon craftsman red tank, that sucked. It would run constantly because the air tools would **** it dry in what seemed to be every bolt i tried to take off.

Well I purchased the IR SS3F2-GM (same as the one above but with horizontal tank). Man this thing is quiet compared to my non-oiled craftsman. Where did you get that hour meter? and how hard are they to connect?

Bringing this back from the dead. I'm currently moving into a much smaller 2 car suburban garage and now am in the same ballpark as the original poster. Besides the obvious lack of extra capacity, what would be the major downside to running something along the lines of this.... http://www.eatoncompressor.com/catalog/item/733537/6523745.htm ? The specs seem to be much higher. Granted you would likely have a bit more water in the system, but your looking at 9cfm rather than the ~5 that all the others had in this post.

9 CFM @ 90 PSI
Max Pressure 115 PSI
Belt Driven
14 AMPS/110V
1.15 Service Factor
TEFC Motor
Capacitor Start
1.5 Running HP Motor

I have that yellow Dewalt vertical on wheesl for when I can't use the big compressor. It is good. Even tho oilless, it is quite quiet. Will turn the air tools I use and has 200 lbs tank storage pressure. I think it was about $300 on sale at Home Depot. Very conveinent.

There's no way this thing gives you 9 CFM at 90. Probably looking at 6 or atmost 7. Compared with some of the IR or CH short fatboy ones posted earlier, this cannot possibly be more efficient.

Looks good and the price does as well. Could pick up that Eaton and grab a 25 or 30 gallon tank to plumb in and you would be set, or perhaps have them build it for you. I have a 60g Eaton 5hp two stage in my garage and purchased a Speedaire 1NNF7 for my fathers garage. That portable Eaton looks a little better than the Speedaire for the price...

(BTW: I am completely happy with my Eaton.)

Yes I would. Noise and heat will be less. Read this link for what I did (similar to what you want to do)

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=801872&postcount=755

You won't be sorry.

Nice setup.

Seriously though, if they could throw the the motor and pump from this... http://www.eatoncompressor.com/catalog/item/733537/6523745.htm onto this... http://www.eatoncompressor.com/catalog/item/733537/344943.htm , you'd have the best of both worlds.

I'm wondering why is it that the IR and CH 30 gallons are $400+ with less capability than this little 8 gallon unit for only $279?
