Just mowed the yard today and decided that a cordless, electric grass trimmer with the rechargable batteries might be nice to have. My yard is too big for a corded trimmer and too big to use my hand shears. The "slightly modified" gas powered trimmer from the farm is overkill though. Anybody use a cordless trimmer? Any recommendations on brand, model etc? Thanks in advance!

I haven't really ever heard much good about cordless trimmers. My mom has one and the battery life is incredibly short on her postage stamp sized lawn. If your property is too large for a corded trimmer, I would say just get a cheap gas trimmer from home depot or wal mart and save yourself the headache of having to quit halfway through a job because your battery crapped out

i have a B&D cordless trimmer that belonged to my mom. when she sold her house, and moved into an apt it was one of the things she gave me.
it's probably 10 years old, and still works with no problems.

dude get a new bad @ss 4 stroke from Stihl or Troy Bilt and get all the nifty attachments for it! You know you want to! You wouldn't be in the tool forum if you didn't have a love for awesome tools...

You can get a trimmer with a shaft drive and add: Pole saw, hedge trimmer, garden cultivator, leaf blower, edger, brush blade, and more!

Ok, yeah I am extra pumped because I bought one today and ditched a 20yr old craftsman 2cycle

Stihl and Troy Bilt should not even be mentioned in the same sentence.

Troy-Bilt = JUNK

Stihl = Awesome

My Stihl weedeater and blower started with ease again this year. This is the 4th year for owning them and I have not once regretted buying a Stihl. I have 1.5 acres.

Some things are just better with gas. Battery technology is not good enough for yard tools - and what happens when the batteries die after a few years?

I bought one of those propane powered trimmers when they were clearing them out at home depot. I probably wouldn't pay full pop for it but I was intrigued by the (relatively) small 4 stroke propane engine. I have a nice commercial grade stihl too but it stopped running on me a few years ago. Probably needs the carb and fuel lines cleaned out.

Troy-Bilt was bought out by some company a few years ago, and they're a hot steaming pile now. They used to be an incredible company, and we've got the tools to prove it.

I wouldn't touch a cordless weedwacker. I used one at a friend's house and they're absolute junk. Zero power, no battery life, just generally wimpy. Any gas machine would walk all over it any day. Save yourself the aggravation and just buy a gas powered unit.

I've had a few cordless trimmers over the past 15 years or so. My wife likes using a trimmer and she won't use a gas model. Fine by me!

The first one was a Ryobi 12 volt. It worked ok but the battery was built in, so when it went dead (about halfway through the job), I had to plug it back in and wait. DON'T BUY ONE THAT HAS A BUILT IN BATTERY. After about 2 or 3 years, it wouldn't hold much of a charge anymore.

The second one was a Black & Decker. It was lighter and worked ok but it also had a built in battery. The bearings wore out pretty quickly. I won't buy another B&D. Not very good quality.

The third is the one I've been using for about 4 years. It's an off brand called American Gardener and it works great. It's very light, 18 volt and has a removable battery that recharges in 1/2 hour. I got a spare battery, so when it runs out of juice halfway through the job, I can just plug in a fresh battery. Great feature, BUT the batteries are getting old and they don't have them at the store anymore.

Bottom line - If you're going to get a cordless trimmer, be sure it has a removable battery and you can get spares.

I love rechargeable cordless stuff. I also have a cordless leaf blower (***** for cleaning up leaves but great for drying a car or motorcycle), a cordless hedge trimmer (works great) and a cordless lawnmower that also works great but my lot is only 90' x 100' and only about 50% grass.
