I picked up this grinder for $20 at an estate sale today. It is missing one of the shields, but is in great shape otherwise. I found the parts list for it and the part number is 3160353. I did a quick Google search, but didn't find any. I thought I'd try here to see if anyone has one that doesn't work they'd be willing to part out. If not I'll just make one.

I have seen those called 'side covers' and 'wheel covers'.

Try looking on OWWM.org, you may find someone with spares. The covers are different from model to model, BTW.

Good luck, nice grinder at a very good price.

Those side covers are one of the common missing pieces on these old grinders. However, with 1 side cover, both work rests and both eye shields, your 5 steps ahead of the game:)

Probably someone took it off when wanting to use a wire wheel and then the two parts were forever separated. What you could do is just use a wire wheel on that side:D

What's funny is a few weeks back I made a post in Jack Olsen's garage thread (12 Gauge Garage) about finding one of these old 50s-60s Craftsman grinders in Exc condition on C/L for about $20-25.

Sounds like someone unknowingly took me up on it;)

EDIT: regarding the OWWM site, the best way to find a cover would probably be to join up, then post a 'Want to Buy' in the classifieds section, along with pictures of your grinder and what side you need. You never know what people may have lurking in their 'rat holes':)

Possible, but I was looking at things closer today and it looks like it has the original wheels on it and I don't think they've ever been off! Well, not until today anyway. I put a polishing wheel on the side without the cover, since that's part of the reason I wanted it anyway. :) I'd still like to have the cover anyway but like I said, if I ever feel like I need it and I don't find one I'll make one.

your best bet is to give up on it entirely and ship it to me. it is hopelessly lost and the best option is for me to dispose of it for you.

nice looking grinder there. i have no valuable input. sorry.

I have the same grinder and I too have the side shield off-it's in the way! But-I need to keep the shield. Some pics of that shield. The other newer grinder uses the same side covers too.

You're such a tease!

I was just trying to help out and show a picture of my cover that I lost for 15 years and now found it because you got me wondering where it was! Now everyone will know exactly what it looks like and they will sure enough find one for you.

I have the same exact grinder. It was one of the first things my wife bought for me when we first got married 43 years ago. It's a great grinder. No I am not interested in parting it out. Like others have said it should be fairly easy to make one. Good luck with it.

Bump, just bought this grinder from my neighbor for $40, looks like it's rarely been used. How old is this thing? Started it up and sounds better than the new ones in store.
