For spray foam "repairs" I've been using guns like this:

Key isn't so much in the gun itself, but having the can of compressed solvent to run through the gun after you spray that attaches in the same way as the foam can.

I use one of these:

Amazon. I've been using the same one for years. As long as you remember to close the needle valve, it never clogs. Let the foam on the tip set, then scrape off with a razor blade.

I'm using Great Stuff foams. I tried using the cleaner, but found that the valves on these cans tend not to reseal when removed from the gun, wasting a lot of foam and cleaner--and making a hell of a mess. But, as mentioned, closing the valve firmly assures you just grab the gun, open the valve and shoot away--after months of sitting on the shelf.

I originally had a Hilti brand foam gun, and as you said, close the needle valve, leave the can in place, and it would never clog. Bent the nozzle tube once and it was done. No other gun has worked like that for me.

Agreed that when removing a partially used can, many do not reseal and then you have a foaming mess.

I buy them at Home Depot. Or I should say, the company buys them.

Buy the can of cleaner. After foaming, attach the cleaner and run it thru. Especially if you are not using the gun daily.
I had one of those. When it clogged, I replaced it with a random one from amazon that was 1/5 the price. As far as I could tell, it was identical. It lasted until I dropped it from a ladder. it got replaced with another generic one, which lasted long enough, but I left a can on it for a year, and it cured in the gun. I think that's a common problem, they'll not cure if you use them often enough, but if you only use them intermittently, they go bad, because the seals aren't perfect or something.

That has to be a PITA to clean up if the can does not have a bag/liner ...
Yes, it would be. But with a liner, by the time you find it next morning it's almost entirely set and has made a perfect fit to the garbage can. Good luck getting that liner out.

Garbage cans ain't cheap, but they're not really all that expensive....

I have this one and another. Using for 2 types of foam. I bought the cleaner too, but never used it. Close valve every time you lay it down. Use lacquer thinner and rag to keep outside of the tip clean. May have to rig a way to tilt gun and foam can over to soak tip in lacquer thinner if necessary. The ball in the tip is the seal, do not damage it. I have kept gun and foam can assembled on shelf for over 2 years with no issues.
