I have access to my stepdads tools but I'm borrowing his circular saw enough that I thought I should get my own. I will just use it for diy stuff and a few projects (the biggest being a toy box for my daughter).

I went to Home Depot today and they had a rigid and a makita for $99.
I was just curious what the consensus was on cheaper circ saws.

Makita, Skil, and Porter Cable all make good saws. This is a good tool to shop for on Craigslist. Always a bunch for sale.

I bought a Skil via Amazon for $49 and have been happy with it so far. Do yourself a favor and go ahead buy the Diablo blade as recommended on here.

Garage sales. Those people are often moving and don't have the time to screw around with Craigslicts.(Craig's Derelicts).Flea markets are OK too, depending on The'Hood.
Pawn shops are generally high since they spend all day on eBay.They KNOW the numbers. At least with them you can handle the item and maybe even crank it up before buying.

Stay away from battery operated saw. I have an 18v dewalt circular saw and it always run out of power mid cut. It *****. The saw acts like there is enough power and then just pukes on me. Anyone want to buy a Dewalt 18v circular saw? Works great!! Ha!

Speaking of selling, I do want to sell a Baldor grinder. Is it ok to start a thread for that or does it need to go to classifieds? I would rather sell it to a GJ member and not some jackass on CL.

That's LOT of money (ie $100) for normal circular saw. Either the Ridgid or Makita for $99 at HD likely will last you lifetime with no issues.

Heck, for half that amount $50 you should find very good used sidewinder on CL. I've seen excellent Skil brand 2 1/4 HP for $40 on CL.

I've got Craftsman 1 3/4 HP circular saw for past 20 years that has done anything I've thrown at it.

I'd recommend 2 HP or greater for newer corded saw today. Look for laser light feature as well.

Actually, in long run you may want BOTH a corded saw and cordless saw. The new power of Milwaukee fuel 18V is changing cordless.

Thus, I'd recommend you get nice used corded saw on CL for $25 to $50 and save the extra money to put towards high quality CORDLESS saw in the future (ie Mw, Makita, DeWalt, etc). There may be some great markdown (or even Penny) deals at HD next spring !! ;)

I like the Milwaukee 6390 circular saw a lot. They are around $130 new, but you can find them used on CL for a lot less.

I had an old green Black & Decker 7 1/4" saw. I abused it for decades. It finally died after a ton of pressure treat. I replaced it with a Porter Cable that should last me for life

Find a brand you like (Dewalt or Milwaukee) and start getting cordless tools. I use the 20v Dewalt circular almost everyday and it works great. Cuts thick hardwoods just fine with a good battery.

I do have a corded Milwaukee saw for big jobs and that thing is a beast. This is for repetitive hard use.

I'd get a makita worm drive, I've had one for a couple years and its going strong. CL is usually sidewinders in my area and I hate using that style. You can never see your line. I gave away an almost brand new milwaukee sidewinder because they **** so much

I'd say Skil.

I bought one at Wal-mart on sale for around $35 seven years ago.

It still works perfectly and I've cut quite a bit with it.

For corded I love the Makita 5007. I've had a couple and will likely always own one. I have a corded DeWalt that I like too. Buy a decent one and put a good blade on it. I've had good luck with the Diablo blades but sometimes get pretty good life and results out of the cheaper ones.

Cordless models are getting better all the time with brushless models from Makita and Milwaukee getting good reviews. I've been trying to decide which one to go with but still can't justify the cost.

This is the exact advice I would give as well. I don't think I have ever paid more than $20 for a good made in USA circular saw. I got a really nice 70's vintage Black and Decker the other day for $5 at a yard sale.

Track down a Porter Cable 324. I've got 2 that I've been using professionally for the last 10 years. One was used when I bought it. I'm going to cry when I finally wear those saws out.

Makita 5007 is a great saw as well. They are pretty much the saw that all others are judged by.

Since replacement parts are so easy to get I wouldn't think you'd have to worry about them wearing out.

Time for you to search the Black Friday website for upcoming tool savings.

I saw a great deal on a Porter Cable circular saw in the last two days.

I have a corded Milwaukee that is great, but it hardly ever leaves its (crappy) case because I use my Milwaukee M18 cordless most of the time. I just finished building an entire house, and mostly used cordless tools. A good cordless is about $100, but the batteries will kill ya.

My Makita 18vx2 (36v) has plenty of power ;)

Pick up a few extra blades for your stepdad & you when you purchase your 5007.

For DIY its hard to go wrong with the Makita 5007, tried and true design.

Ditto. Hard to beat that saw, it should last a lifetime.

Agreed, you see 10 Makitas for any other brand where I'm from.

Makita 5007 is a great saw as well. They are pretty much the saw that all others are judged by.

Then again..........You might want to give this one a look -

Are you right or left handed? If right handed I'd look at this Bosch. Blade is on the correct side for the user to make cuts easier.

Whatever you get, just make sure you put the proper blade on it, just not a "good" blade. The blade is as important as the saw.
