Looking for a good Gas Can

Guys

I have several atvs and lawnmowers so I go through a lot of gas. I am using Blitz ventless gas cans and absolutely hate them! What do you use? Does anybody know of a good brand? I am looking at Eagle. But over $60 for a 5 gallon gas can seems a bit high! Any suggestions?

I just found out Blitz is now out of business. After all the frustration I have had with mine I can see why!

All the good ones are banned. A friend had to buy one at a gas station on an emergency once. Talk about a mess. You have to twist this, pull this and still manage to pour the gas where you want it. Best bet is a garage sale.

My favorite are the older Rubbermaid containers. I called one day to order a new vent cap. They basically screamed at me to stop using it at once.

I have a dozen or so of the Racing style jugs. Will never go back to anything else.

The replacement vent and spout kits are the best way to go. But I removed the spring in my spout and used a grease zerk with the spring removed for the vent.

VP Racing Fuels 3512 Red Motorsport Jug - 5 Gallon Capacity - $33

Spout available at extra cost. If you buy a case of 4 on eBay you will save about $10/jug.

Just ordered a Justrite from Amazon today...significantly cheaper than Northern Tool. Be sure to note spout size- 5/8" for automotive and 1" for equipment.

After a bad experience with Eagle I'm impressed quality of AJustrite.

The race fuel jugs are well made and priced reasonable from speedway motors, summit and jegs. They are not bound by government regs to keep you "safe".

I too have been severely disappointed in all the available gas cans. Doubly so here in the People's Republic of Kalifornia!

I finally found a CARB (and other regulations) compliant container that IMO is really good. Take a look at:

http://www.nospill.com/

I have been using a couple of these for over a year, and am very pleased with both the construction and the performance. No spillage, no hassles delivering gas or diesel, and they automaticly stop when filling things like mowers, weed whackers & tractors. No screw on lids that strip with a few uses. I put 2 gallons of gas in the 2 1/2 gallon can, and have plenty of room for mixing oil, etc. I use the 2 1/2 gallon with straight gas for my mowers.

I use the 5 gallon one for diesel for my Kubota. I have the NoSpill 6" extension on the diesel can. Just stick the nozzle in the tank, push on the button, and it stops at just the right point. My previous 5 gallon jeep can was a pita, requiring a funnel and a measuring stick, then still was subject to under-fill or over flow when I put a few ounces too much in.

These are actually superior to my previous 'jeep' cans!

After a few previous experiences with the plastic cans that are on the market, I thought I would never write that!!

Love the race cans, and slowly converting to them.
I have taken the Obama approved cans and added vents by drilling a hole where the little yellow vent cap used to be, then fishing a valve stem in place. Not hard, with a piece of wire, then pull it into place. Works pretty slick.

I use the race fuel jugs for both gas & diesel, and also have a couple of the Scepter military style containers. I really like the Scepter military containers but unless you have a "contact" in the military or a friend in Canada, where they can be purchased, they are pretty expensive to buy in the US if you can even find them.

I've seen people use valve stems to vent the can. Drill a hole, feed the valve into place, pop a cap on and you're good to go. I think valve stems are couple of bucks for 4.

These cans were supposed to stop spills and keep evaporation to a minimum. I am sure they have made things worse in most situations. I may have spilt some gas in my younger days, but since those "new" cans, I have spilt so much gas. Not to mention the amount of cans I have had to purchase because the cost of the nozzle replacement is almost as much as a new can or the company doesn't make them anymore.

I know they slow evaporation down, the cans expand like crazy. My question to all the scientists is where does all that pressurized gas go when I start to pour?

Well, after watching the video, I'm going to get one of the "no spills" to try. If it is as good as Jill says, I'll end up buying more. she really doesn't say, but I wonder if they have a 5 gallon size.

I sure wish i could get Jill to stop by the garage and give me a tutorial!

I know this isn't what you're looking for (unless you have a lathe) but I actually started making my own spouts last summer. Turn down some aluminum, bore it out, slap on a clear piece of tubing (vinyl IIRC) from the local big box store, and make a plug for the other end (hell, on one of them I'm using an old synthetic wine cork).

Made one last summer and the vinyl has held up very well to the gas. Even if it does start to harden, yellow, or crack the tubing comes in 5ft lengths and it's easy to swap.

so how do the No-Spill cans work? How does it stop the flow of gas when the level in the tank reaches the bottom of the spout?

Since our all knowing government stepped in and mandated no vents on gas cans its been spurting and not flowing out. Just get a plastic 5 gallon gas can and a tire valve. Measure the diameter of the valve that fits in the wheel hole. Drill the appropriate hole in the can. Drop a string into the hole and fish it out the spout. Tie the string to the threaded end of the valve. Pull it thru the holes. Since you don't need the valve core, get rid of it, put on the cap & you're done.

I bought a 5 gal No-Spill from Northern Tool a few weeks ago, couldn't swing the money for the Type II Safety cans. The No-Spill works great in terms of venting and complete ease of use.

Not sure. Filled up my mower once and it worked pretty well. It shuts off not exactly at the bottom of the spout, but a little above it. Compared to the old cans, no complaints from me. Would def buy again.

Psst, the gas can design change was passed during the Bush years in office. Just sayin'

I have the metal can with yellow funnel and got rid of all my plastic cans.
