Looking for a Match MA56 key

I think the box is from the 70's. (Maybe early 80's) I've had it for about 20 years. Lost the damn key in my shop.

Looks like none of the eBay sellers who sell Match keys have the MA series.

Anyone know online locksmiths who can make these keys?

What is the indirect code on the lock? IIRC it should be MAT not MA.

I will double check. Maybe my eyes are starting to go more than I thought! Glasses on and off, depending upon distance. And sometimes a magnifying glass!

Revisiting this. And attaching a photo. Grateful for all y’alls input.

Talked to Matco and they said based on code for MA56 they couldn’t give me a key that corresponds to lock. For SO and Kennedy the number on lock corresponds to a particular key.

Am I reading this wrong? It looks like MA56 to me.

Last resort is to drill it out but I’d rather not have to. Restored a lot of old SO and Kennedy in my day but no longer my idea of fun to fiddle around with locking bars and making sure everything aligns!

I would try to order a SK056 and give that a shot.

Is it possible to have a new matco key made

Does anyone know if matco or a locksmith woill be able to make a new key like the one in the pic. The key does have a number on the back side that I guess was to be able to get another one made but the box is 15 years old now and I don't know how long they used this style key.

Yup. I'd try the Remline key for sure (looks like they made the box that the OP has for Matco as I recognize that key cylinder pretty strongly now that I've seen it). If the SK056 does not work, I'd rake it.

Hey RTM: you are right! I did participate in that other thread. That'll teach me to do a more thorough search of the forum! I can't remember anything these days. I'm chagrined. Man, that was 14 years ago. I lost the key and then found it back then.

And I lost the damn key again about 6+ months ago. I can't even remember what's in the box now. I've got several tool boxes all over the place. I guess no important tools, or I'd be missing things.

It'll be like Christmas when I get it open. Last time, went to lock it, and successfully did so.

And then thought I might've dropped the key. Looked everywhere. I've got this box sandwiched in between about 5 tons of stuff on either side and couldn't pull it out from the wall to check it. I know it sounds insane, but I thought, could I have "locked" it and then shut the door with key inside. Is my brain becoming so feeble in old(er) age, that I can't figure it out? Don't know if that's possible, I believe you have to "have" the key in order to lock the drawer, as far as I remember, the lock is the type that's mechanical and "strikes" against the surface of the slotted "punch out" in the sheetmetal. Anyway, the shop needs a good clean out, so maybe I'm going to have to drag everything out and check everywhere for where the key may've bounced if I did indeed drop it!

Based on my posts in the vintage toolbox thread and elsewhere below, my 1969 Blackhawk looks like someone's Remline, and my key replacement was listed as a Craftsman, but also a Waterloo and other flavors.

We have a winner! From what I can find, looks like it was offered from Fall/Winter 1948 thru Fall/Winter 1949. Doesn't appear in the 1948 Hand Tool Catalog, and price dropped each catalog (down to 13.50 in F/W 1949) before it disappeared. No drawer slides to speak of, and the locking mechanism...

Not sure if just randomly trying any 56 key, but if Brandon thinks so, give it a whirl for $15. Beats moving 5 tons of stuff while cleaning the shop.

thanks for the info on Remline. I think some of the old SO boxes used those keys too. I tried that 56 key. No dice.

Long story long:

I emailed the various sellers on eBay that sold keys for Matco boxes and one guy replied that even Matco doesn't have that key.

Tried other online locksmiths to see if they had a record. Nothing.

I also emailed Matco. And then called them. The guy on the phone super helpful and polite and patient. He went through some paper catalogs. He said he thought this Matco was made at same time or around the time that Mac and Marco had a collaboration. Could've even been a Mac box rebadged (if I understood correctly).

Anyway. They thought they had a replacement key and sent it to me for about $7 -- this was based on the model and serial number on the back of the box (which wasn't in the system, but again on some paper records). But that key didn't work.

I noticed, later, when I shut and locked top drawer, that the other drawers weren't locked and I was able to pull them out.

I looked everywhere for the key. Maybe I dropped it somewhere.

So I'm going to take everything out of bottom drawers, lighten the load, and lift into the back of my truck or wagon and take it to a locksmith.

I thought about cutting it open, but didn't want to mess with it. I also thought about taking the bottom drawers out and working my way "up" to see if I could finagle the top drawer but again, time. And not where I want to put my efforts.

I live in a small town; about 1/1000th the size of LA - have had at least two keys made by just taking my devices in to locksmith businesses; waiting ~15mins and walking out with multiple copies

I will have to do this. Was hoping to avoid taking the time to do it. I try to avoid tripping over a dollar to save a dime. probably genetic. I could've had a locksmith come out for $150 and it would've been cheaper than all the time and effort put into it! But I won't learn.

Might I suggest once your locksmith makes a key that works your lock, assuming he fits a key to your lock, not rekeying/changing tumblers. Make 10 copies and post them on Ebay at $15 . They'd probably sell quick and if you lost your keys again, you could sell yourself one from the ring of 10.
