Hi everyone.

stained some stairs, and the wife wants a matte finish. The stain was oil based, a varathane gel stain. I can’t seem to find a oil based matte sealer.

any recommendations?

thank you.

Minwax has several satin oil based finishes;
I have used a lot of the helmsman both brush and spray and really like it.

I second any recommendation by General Finishes. They basically don’t make a bad product…at least I have yet to find one and have used many including the product linked above. How are you planing on applying it?

You really should get actual floor finish and not finish that isn't rated for floors. Stairs take a beating and using a finish designed for floors will give you better results. You can get floor finishes in whatever sheen you want. I use Duraseal and you can get it in matte and satin. I used matte on my house recently.

Hi.

Is there a matte finish for oil stains made by Duraseal?

Stain doesn't really have a sheen. The poly or whatever you add to protect the surface is the finish and that is available in all sheen options (gloss, semi, satin, matte). I would not recommend a stain and sealer in one for floors unless it is something more like Rubio monocoat, which I love but it is a completely different animal and you have to understand what you are getting when you go that route.
