No more than £500 benwah and I wouldn't be welding too often. Spare time rather than as a job. I was thinking gas but if one is easier/better just let me know :)

I practically grew up in a steel fab shop, and still have a bunch of friends and family who own them or work in them. Everyone uses Miller or Lincoln welders. They are reputable brands. I would suggest gas, as it is the most common, and if you're welding infrequently it won't be too expensive to maintain. I say that coming from the states, not knowing how much Argon/Co2 mix gas costs in the UK.

If I am correct, most UK homes comes with standard 220v, correct? If so, that really opens up your options.

I suggest doing a bit of research, check online forums for used welders in good condition within your budget. You should be able to pickup a nice welder for 500 pounds.

If you can find a Millermatic 200 for a decent price and in decent shape, jump on it. That's my my two-penn'orth.
