Good evening all, I have a snap on box pictured below, and its just about full. Ive done some shopping but im not sure what to get. I'm hoping to get an ~55" box. I'm gonna be looking for a used box to save a bit of money but in general im not sure which one i'd like. My only necessity is that it has a long top drawer. It can be SO, Mac, Matco, Craftsman, no HF boxes. It is going to be used in a shop and eventually at my house. thank you guys and all suggestions are welcome.

Are you are just looking at just a bottom box or a top and bottom. Just a bottom will not have much more space then your combo. As for truck brand, all are good. I would look at all the boxes in that size and see which you like. SO KRLs are the gold standard. Big Macs are 67" wide, with main drawers about 3' wide compaired to SO and Matco at about 30". If you really want room, used triple banks are becoming easy to find used

mainly just a bottom, with that big top drawer that i specified i can fit all my sockets in it, using these: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200234174_200234174 as of now only a few drawers can hold those but theres not enough room to fit both regular and impact sockets on those... if i can use them it would make a lot more space available in the other drawers.

wornout, i like those boxes, but i want a box where i can do some type of a payment plan. i dont have a credit card, only a debit card and im paying for school so i cant put down 1500-2000 at once

So, except for a select few that dealers might have in possesion, how exactly do you plan to pull this off?

Expecting a owner on craigslist/classifieds/ebay to finance?

Bank loans are cheaper than truck loans....hell even some credit cards are. Then to top it off, your truck credit would be calculated atleast partially by your credit.

Talk to your local snap on guy about a student discount and trade in your current box. Mine gave me a student discount and I didn't put down a dime or trade in anything. Interest is a little high IMO but it's all calculated up front and there's no penalty for early pay off. So I just double up payments when I have a killer week. My normal payments are 39 bucks a week. Also snap on has a classic 78 with 2 full length drawers now. That's what I got

I hate to see anyone go in debt over a tool box and a 55'' box might not work for a craftsman box (although I seem to recall they had a pro line of toolboxes that might work).
How much would the op save on his student discount on a truck box?

Let me ask this question if you are dead set against a General tool box (for not a lot of money) why not try this out or at least hear me out.

Buy the General from HF use it for several years untill you find the box of your dreams or you can save up the cash for that box you have allways wanted and then just sell the box when you are done with it.

well for what it is worth just my two cents.

+100 You want a deal on a used one (I fully understand that), and you want financing? WTF? Getting a box financed is going to cost you 2 to 3X finding a similar box used.

As far as what to get? Watch the used market, and let the DEAL decide. If that means you end up with a Snap On, or a Cornwell, or a Matco? I would be open to any of the better brands, AT THE RIGHT PRICE.

So what kind of boxes do I have? Well, I have a Cornwell, and a couple of Snapon, all bought used for a small fraction of new.

Deals on used stuff start with having CASH in hand.

Interest all calculated up front almost always means major screw job on the finance charge, and no discount if you pay it off early.

My best advice is to continue to use your current box while you save for a bigger box. Or if you really need it now look into a bank loan and scour Craigslist for the right deal.

I don't think it's a great exaggeration to say you can get twice the box for half the money when you have cash in hand. I bought my 56" 4 Series Matco for $800 cash and my current triple bank KRL for $1500. I doubt you'll be able to find deals anywhere this good if you need to finance it.

I know alot of guys out there look down on the Harbor Freight stuff ( I agree alot of it is junk). They have a large bottom box that sells for $799 . I've looked at the box and it is a very well built box. I would not hesitate to purchase one for myself if I needed one. It's worth taking a look at. Just my 2 cents.
