Hello,

I have been searching craigslist hi and lo for a tool box. I originally was going to buy a couple HF 41 inchers.

What kind of box do you think I can score for <$1500 on craigslist. It seems all the SO, MATCO, and MAC boxes are goinf for >$2200.

Just looking for some motivation to keep searching, or should I snag the HF boxes. Not in a big hurry but dont want to have buyers remorse.

Thanks, Petro55

You'll get lot better info back from GJer's if we know what COUNTRY and STATE you are located.

Update your GJ Profile.

CL deals pop up all the time in the $1500 to $2000 range for 2 bay Snappy, Mac or Matco tool boxes. Sounds like you've got the tools to fill a triple bay. For triple, you're likely looking at $2500 to $3500 range.

If you're handy with welding, gotta check out Steevo thread where he put 3 US General (ie Harbor Freight) 44" tool boxes in an awesome benchtop cage. I'd recommend you duplicate what Steevo did.

CNGsaves,

Just updated profile!

Yes I did read that thread about welding up a base, really nice job. I plan to add a welder to my new garage, but I would need to practice before I tackle a job like that.

A 3 bay would be really nice for future tool upgrades. Trying to find a Matco 3 bay or somthing similiar. I would like to but one box and not worry about it for the next 30 or so years.

I wouldn't buy any of those. Get a Lista or a Stanley Vidmar. Twice the box with way better drawer bearings. 440 LBS capacity on ALL the drawers. And you can put dividers in the drawers in infinite ways. Just sayin.

Just picked up my first Vidmar. Dude didn't know what it was. $75. Now I want to sell all my boxes and trade up to more Vidmar/Lista stuff.

I guess if you needed a mobile box, a nice Snappy/Matco etc would be nice, but if it's stationary, industrial cabs are the bee's knees.

CL is all about waiting and stuff will show up. Last Friday a Kennedy versa cart with a 8 drawer roll cab mounted on, $100. The deals are there for those who wait and watch.

Here it is. I've seen them on CL 2 or 3 times this cheap, but I was too late. Keep your eyes peeled all day, every day and you'll find them.

And b/c it is 30" deep, there is a LOT of storage capabilities here.

Here's a link to a new one....http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/STANLEY-VIDMAR-Modular-Drawer-Cabinet-12C802

Absolute steal! And it has the lock. If you dont have the key you can get it from the vidmar website. They just need the # on the cylinder.

Make any box a roller with a cradle and castors:D

Took me over a year of daily Craigslist searches, cash in hand, ready to jump on the right deal. There can be long dry spells, there can be days with several good choices too...See sample section from Omaha Craigslist below.
After a lot of looking and considerable thought, couple things I figured out...
The HF 41" and 44" are an excellent value as is their 5-drawer Cart.
At times, a lightly used 40" KRA combo can be had at $1000 or less.
Don't discount the older friction slide models, they can be butter smooth are high quality/built strong.
Once in a great while a nice KRL pops up amidst the $5000 dreamers.
