I have the Proto J150WP, they're very well made, well balanced, and very strong.

my coworker, I believe, has the Mac version of that gun. I've used it a few times on lug nuts (he left it by a car I was working on), seemed decent, not weak or anything that I didn't like about it. But my IR 2235 is stronger, he's borrowed it a few times when the Mac didn't quite have enough

About a year ago, I saw an Ingersoll Rand IR-231c on Amazon for $77.00 so I bought it and it sat in my tool box without being used until about two weeks ago when I used it to put the snow tires on my work van. I think I like it better than my "1400" ft lbs Milwaukee. It's lighter and faster for sure. The lugs are torqued to 150, so it's not a challenge for either, but it seemed like the air powered broke them loose easier.

I just looked, and it's $114 on Amazon now

i've been using IR 231 with the boot for about 8 years now for basic 1/2 jobs. i have a stronger Cornwell as backup that i got about a year ago and have never even used, as the IR always gets it done. few drops of oil and a pull of the trigger at the end of the day and it'll last forever, probably.

i also have a cordless Mac 1/2 in the work truck that is great but heavy and needs a large and expensive battery to wake up the torque ratings. minimum of a 5ah Dewalt/Mac battery to make any real power. that is inconvenient when i usually am also using batteries for other things like lights, cordless ratchets, 3/8 impacts, etc.

whatever floats your boat but if you're searching in the pneumatic market the IR 231 is phenomenal and will last you. i suggest a boot to protect it though.

yeh the 231 is a timeless impact, it been copied/cloned by almost everyone and well refined over years although surprised trigger never improved or power increased with motor and hammer revisions .
I bought 231G at a meet sale for 20bucks with busted anvil, was an impulse nostalgia thing and like the grip and trigger on that model but buy time I done anvil/motor/seals and a boot it not a lot more buy new as they well under 100bucks at times .

Yeah those 231s are underrated in my book. And very durable, the AK of the impact gun world.

....or the Warn 8274 of impacts ;)

I've never used a 231 but in some circles they were considered the OBA gun because of allegedly low CFM consumption relative to power output. Now I think cordless impacts mean far fewer people are carrying air tools on the trail.
