Hey all,
First of all, a little background on me since this is my first post. I've been lurking both prior to membership and after membership. My name is Shawn and I'm Active Duty Army for the last 16 1/2 years, so you can assume I'm a careerist. Out of that time I've spent well over half of it in Germany. I have decided due to family reasons I will retire there and have purchased a house there for that reason. Currently I'm stationed in Texas and my wife and kids remained in Germany. Since I'm looking at going back and the Army will ship just about anything over there for me, I'm looking at a decent sized box to replace my older and slightly outgrown Snap On box.

So, I'm looking at probably a max of 56" but actually leaning more toward 40-48" with maybe a side cabinet due to probably having to put in in my basement. I've been really looking at the Homak H2pro series from Northern Tool. As well as strictly tool boxes .com. Does anyone have any experience with the Homak H2pro or the Extreme Tools brand?

Anyone got any other recommendations?

Thanks,
Shawn

I'm a retired USAF MSgt, so you can trust me....:headscrat

The Extreme 55" Professional is a super heavy duty set...money well spent...:rocker:

It will probably last you for the rest of your life...:bounce:

Getting it/them into the basement may be a little tricky...:lol_hitti

If you have a Northern Tool in your area, they likely have the Homak H2Pro on display. The one closest to me has three or four floor models. Go check them out in person, but from what I've seen they're fairly robust. I'm also interested to see this upcoming Milwaukee box in person.

Thanks for the quick reply oldldh.

IF I get bigger than say a 40-41" it will probably go in the garage (one car, nothing to really talk about :( )

Thanks quattroJoe, Yes there is a Northern Tool near me, I've looked at them. They do seem built really well. And, their price is certainly in order, basically the manager told me I could get the Gov't rate and tax free so it would even be better. They have a 56" and a 36" in the H2Pro, I really wish they had the 41" on display.

What is this Milwaukee box you speak of?

First off op, welcome to the forum, and as a civilian, thank you for your service.

The website that came from is from a member here. A wealth of information, well worth checking out. Someone is bound to say it, so I will just mention that the US General boxes at harbor freight are quite good for the money. If you are nearby one, it would be worth it to at least look at them. Those homak boxes look nice too. Best of luck

Don't get the Homak H2pro. I own the 56" and it's junk. I wouldn't buy it again. If i had a dime for everytime a drawer doesn't lock, i could have bought an Epiq by now.

I'm not too happy with mine either. Primarily because the drawers are the same depth resulting in a lot of wasted space. The top drawer slides are sticky and to get the drawer pulled fully out, you are always having to fight it.

Does anyone know if there is a place to actually touch the extreme tools boxes? I'm really digging the 55" that oldldh posted. Originally, I didn't notice a difference between the 55" and 56" boxes from them aside from the price. The biggest differences being weight capacity, depth, and build thickness.

The only concerns I have with it are it's empty weight, which I assume that the drawers are removable if I do decide to get it in the basement and the overall point pressure on each wheel once it's full as my garage floor has a maximum point pressure if I decide to put it in the garage.

Bubba, that 55x30 beauty was my "delusion" box...

And then my Wife bought me a 56" Harbor Freight roller cabinet for Christmas in 2013...

Being semi-intelligent, I immediately said "Thank you, my love..."

I really like my 56" HF box, but it's not a pimple on the 55x30 Extreme Pro...nevertheless, I will be wrenching out of the HF box for the rest of my time above the grass...

Read the specs and reviews THOROUGHLY on the 55" Pro on the Strictly Toolboxes website...I remember something about different colors, too...

Give them a shout...they will fix you up...

I have a top and bottom 72" h2pro and I really like it. With the add on side box and locker it can end up being a good size box, especially for the price.

Lista is my dream box, and for that sort of $$ I'd take a Lista over the truck boxes any-day. But having said that, the simply tool boxes selections are a great value.

My two complaints against the HF wide boxes are COO, and depth. 18" on a box that big looses a LOT of space; on the other hand, if your shop space is small, that can be a plus.

For top boxes, if you are so inclined, I really like the Montezuma crossover series and for shop use the 36" wide version can eat a lot of tools and almost everything you use constantly is right at your fingertips WITHOUT messing with drawers...

Those wrench racks will hold 2 complete sets of both SAE AND Metrics, all the common sockets, all the common drivers, plus ratchets and extensions, and then some... How many drawers does that free up?

And as previously mentioned thank you (and all other's in and out of active service) for your service!

All that is necessary is something to spread the weight, increase the size of the contact patch...like a piece on plywood...simple really...:D

Or...

If the box is not going to be a roller...remove the castors, and let the box sit on the above mentioned piece of plywood...

Not that currently you intend to sell it but... a used craigslist snap on box would be worth much more in Germany than the price is costs you in the US.
That said someone on here just got a proto box new for $2800 which I thought was an awesome deal.
