Looking for a Road Chest....or three

Besides the truck brands and extreme, what options are there when it comes to road chests? Price is a factor with a $1,000 to $1,200 max which is a simple choice to me. Find a used late model Snap On.

Now the tricky part. I have a friend who wants to replace two medium sized wedge style boxes and keep the price to $600, maybe $800 tops. I'm thinking one Extreme or Williams if going new but the better option is probably one or maybe even two older Snap On road chests.

Any other ideas?

Finding a good used Snap-on road chest is a seldom-to-never event. In fifty years, I've never seen one for sale.

On the other hand, there have been posts here where a never-used chest was found at a decent price.

Bottom line - waiting to find a good-used-for-good-price is not a viable acquisition strategy for someone needing two working road chests.

Maybe he'll get lucky, but most people don't know whereof they speak; nine-of-ten "Snap-on road chest" I've seen on craigslist are just a drop-front top box. Still a quality piece, but definitely not as heavily built as the for-true road chest.

I've got a Montazuma and my friend was running two of the knockoffs. They are a good option if all you have is a basic set of tools. I've got to the point where it's kind of an Easter egg hunt trying to find my speciality stuff piled in the bottom.

Now with metric I either need to add another Montazuma or buy the bigger box and sell my old one. i'm ready to put my Montazuma phase behind me and go to something better.

Mine is my old topbox on an old kra roll away. It works great for me, but it isn't a road chest. It would work for me, but I can see it not working for other people.

I have been looking at that. They used to make a six drawer also. I'm going to buy a box for my friend to swap out some work. The JD is looking like a great option.

If I'd seen one of those in person before buying what I have, I might've gone that route.

To the OP, search for Snap On KRA62C. That seems to be the most common road chest, when I was looking I found several from $200-800. Condition and location were the big factors, some of them had ridden around in the back of a truck for years and were pretty beat up. Wound up buying mine from a coworker who never used it.

I used to have a Montezuma style box myself. I had it for about 2 years. It's easy to out grow if you need more than sockets, wrenches and screw drivers.

I've thought about that JD box myself. Right now I have an older SO box. It's pretty good. I have a big JD box in my shop. I really like it.

So true.. having a drop front SnapOn top box does not make a regular box a Road Chest.. My SnapOn Heavy Duty Road Chest is labeled as such, has skid rails on the bottom side, and a heavy drop-front with two handles..
They are heavy weight units.. I bought mine new in 1981, and is still My pet box.

There is one on the Fargo,Nd craig's list for $1500.. Nice condition... Price out a new one @ around $2300... Not a cheap unit.

It may just be because I live in an area with numerous mechanics programs but there have been two late model Snap On's with the cage come up for sale locally on Craigslist.

These Road chests are pretty popular around here. Most of the ag dealers work out of a pickup so most shop mechanics also have a Snap On Road Chest they go out on call with. You would have to be pretty wet behind the ears to confuse a drop front top box with a heavy duty road chest.

No it was init when i bought it. Its not montezuma its sealey ,i suspect made by montezuma as it looks and feels the same as the one i looked at in stricktly tool boxes last year. Im in the Y-uk

Yep, I bought Mine without a cage; just the skid rails on the bottom.. It was used as a regular tool chest, and stayed in a shop; either on a bench or on a roller cabinet till two years ago, when I actually started using it as a Road Chest for field service work. If I were to buy another one; I would still pass on the cage... My needs don't justify the cage, but I am sure there are folks who wouldn't be without one...
