Looking for a scanner to do ABS/SRS

So quick history here. I've been looking around for a scanner to be able to scan ABS and SRS codes for cars as well as Standard powertrain codes. I've looked at snap-on and Mac but for someone like me who's just doing this as side work right now their more comprehensive scanners are way out of my price range. I've also been looking at OTC but apparently there have been some issues with their compatibility according to the reviews I've been reading. I.E. Their paperwork says it can read certain cars but it doesn't.
I finally decided to hop on here and ask you guys because i'm guessing some of you are in the same boat as I am and not looking to spend 2,000$ on a scanner but want to be able to work effectively and accurately diagnose more than just P Codes.

I would check out some of Innova's products. I think some of their higher end models can do ABS/SRS, but still a fair price. We used to have one and I loved it, but it got stolen.

Autel just came out with a new one that is $150 and has a lot of ABS/SRS capabilities that are hard to find on others. I know about it because it's one of the few aftermarket scanners that can access Hyundai ABS codes. At least, the company told me it can when I emailed them. Very few scanners can access Hyundai ABS codes.

Yeah I had looked at the innova stuff and that was the direction I was leaning towards. I do a lot of work on Hondas and some VW's if that makes a difference.

Check the Matco MD1052 and MD1072. I've used both and own the 1072 the MD1072 which I use daily with no issues. Frequent updates via the internet

There are some the aftermarket scan tools can't read the ABS/SRS codes.I know Chrysler 1997 and down are this way,only the factory scan tool DRB III is the only scan tool that can read the ABS codes.For the VWs,try to find an used Snap On Modis and you still can get updates for it,there is a 2 for 1 deal on the updates for the Modis coming sometime.OTC is screwed anyway,Bosch now owns them.Bosch bought out SPX this year.Anything Bosch gets a hold of,they screw it up.

Autel AL 619 came in today. Nice scanner.....reads SRS and ABS codes on my Nissan 350Z, draws graphs, displays live engine data, etc. Plays nice with my other vehicles too.

have the otc at work, is ok for standard stuff (chevy trucks,) but doesnt like alot of SRS systems it seems, wich is of course the whole reason we got it. need to check for updates i guess. did a kia bags belts and module today, acted like it didnt even have an srs or abs system. took the car to another shop with the big bad $2000 napa scanner, it pulled trans codes, but still no srs or abs. light shut off on its own after a few key cycles(????) i thought someone was saying good things about launch?

Once you move into SRS/ABS codes, you get into "big boy" tools.

Not much of a way round it as most of those codes are mfgr. coded and not general codes and often changed or added to every model year.

Modis works. For VW's (and all VAG coded products) Ross-Tech is the solution.

Bottom line. No cheap solution.
You can thank technology and car mfgrs for that.

We've got a Matco Pro Scan (same as an OTC Nemisys) and love it for 95% of the stuff we do. Falls on its face doing eurojunk, but it's waaaaay more convenient than the old Solus (with keys) or *shudder* the PITA Launch GDS we just bought. I've had waaaay more things the Launch wouldn't work with than the Matco... so far it's a $4k BMW oil life resetter, Volvo code clearer, and Chevy ABS pump activator.

My boss made do with it alone for years... well, that and having dealer tech friends that'll loan out an Autel, DRB, or Tech when needed.

Yeah I'm wayyyy too spoiled by having access to a Tech 2. I guess I'll just stick with Engine lights and some ABS for now. I'll keep my friends who have the multi thousand dollar scan tools on speed dial if i need an SRS code taken care of. Thanks for the advice.

Good score. I'm 99% sure I checked Amazon when I was comparing prices on this scanner, but I may be misremembering. Or, the seller you bought from may have added them since I last checked.

Anyway, keep us updated. This is still my top choice in scanners, so I'm waiting to hear more on your opinion of it.

Agreed 100%. It's absolutely the best bang for the buck. It reads SRS, ABS, Engine and Body Control Module codes, is manufacturer specific for just about every brand out there, graphs, prints, live scans, has 4GB of memory, etc. and it's built like a brick. I'm AMAZED at how powerful this tool is for $280. It blows all the Actron and Innova tools right out of the water.

Autel's site only has one 802 model, not two. What's the difference between the two that you referenced?

Frankly, I do what most here would consider "basic" maintenance, so a lot of what it will do is beyond the scope of my skillset. It also does recording and playback, prints, and has a removable data card on its right side.

Nope. There's just one model: MD802. It gives enhanced data. The software gets updated a few times a year. If Autel has one major issue it's that they run too many freaking websites. This causes a lot of confusion and I've told them that they need to fix that mess. The MD802 will read live data, no problem. It's the most capable scan tool you can get for the money (and I've tried a lot of scan tools).

Actually, for some strange reason, there are 2 MD802's, a more limited version and the MD802 All Systems, or at least there was when I bought mine about a year ago. The sleeve that slid over the case was even different showing the different features of each. Happy with the MD802 All Systems, seems very capable for the price, paid $225 new on Ebay.
