Hey guys. I am looking at buying a scroll saw, and was wondering what brand everyone preferred (SnapOn is not the best either). I was curious what everyone looked for in a saw setup, like motor size, speed, throat size. What options were important. Things they wish they could get in a saw set up, and what they could live without. My experience is with an old 80's model craftsman, that had very very basic options, so I don't know what to really look for in a scroll saw. Thanks for the help guys.

JMO, but my father's had a Hegner for 25 years and its the nicest Ive ever seen by far for very intricate work. Barring finding one thats affordable, I'd suggest using Hegner blades in whatever saw you do buy.

The best would be Hegner or Excalibur; both are amazing quality machines that will last a lifetime. Neither are cheap though (around $2k +/-)

As to cheap saws, a Dewalt DW788 is a good saw for a budget (around $500) and with good blades should do a good job.

The cheap saws for around $200 are all the same in my opinion and barely worth wasting time on. Either way you go, buy the best blades you can afford.

As usual Monte, you find some really good stuff.

I've got a Hegner Multimax 22-V on the three legged stand, and it is the finest scroll saw I have ever used OR even seen.

The US importer of Hegner is Advanced Machinery. Parts on 20+ year old machines are readily available.

I got mine on Craigslist, but that's pretty uncommon. You see them on eBay for reasonable prices (a 10+ year old Hegner will still cost more than a brand new DeWalt though) every once in a while too. But the best place to look is to find a local scroll sawing group and ask around (and maybe get some hands-on demos before you buy).

And as good as my Hegner is, if I'm doing fine filigree work with a lot of inside cutting, I'll be using my Cutawl. It's a MUCH better tool for the job. There's no comparison.

What's the application for a scroll saw vs a band saw?

Scroll saws are capable of much tighter turns for intricate designs. They also let you cut internal designs since you can take the blade off and feed it into a small hole. With a bandsaw you can only cut outside edges.
