looking for a socket set

Want a CHEAP set of tools for occasional use in an injection molded case that will keep them secure and from rattling. This will live permanantly in the back of my jeep... dedicated trail tools. Im tired of shuffling tools back and forth between the garage box and the trail bag, and tired of dealing with sockets/ratchets on rails that come loose and get lost at the bottom of a bag full of other tools... would like at least full 3/8 and 1/2" sockets, can pass on ratchets and extensions as I have plenty of those already.

If it included some deeps as well that might be useful.

Suggestions?

I went on the same journey to find something to keep in my Vette. Needed to be in one case, be slim enough to go in the back and put the t tops on, and have a lot of stuff in it. I got the bluepoint blpgssct71. Only thing missing is a hammer. Has a full compliment of sae and mm. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend, but I am very happy with it and the quality. Some other good sets were crescent and channellock, but they were not as complete as I needed.

im not looking for a full complete set of tools... Ive got a bunch of stuff I need that wont be in a multi-kit...

vicegrips, needlenose, Channel locks, torx, BFH, a few BIG sockets for axle nuts and such, and I also carry an 18" tool bag with all that other stuff... im just sick of the socket situation. ordered a set of TekTon wrenches in a roll for $30 on amazon yesterday. likely garbage, but if its living in the jeep they will be used maybe 5x a year, so...

When the Dewalt 204 Piece Set goes on sale for below $150, I think it is hard to beat. The case holds the sockets in place very well. The set isnt without faults but its pretty solid. Personally, I think its nice to include the other tools in like Hpozzouli said so I dont have to add a second case/bag in the trunk.

The big problem with the type of set you are looking for is they are marketed to the home user. So they will be full of "filler". The Dewalt set posted above is one of the more complete set when it comes to sockets and less filler. The store brands usually will have wrenches an hex keys etc. It will be a bit more than cheap but look at Gearwrench sets from ADvanced auto parts or Tooltopia.com

I know what you mean about a cheap set, because off-road you don't want to dig in mud looking for a $30 socket.

I like the ugly multi-colored HF socket sets for $5 (with coupon), because I don't care if one or five get lost and most people won't steal them.

I was looking at buying a wrench roll, the decent ones were all $10, figured for another $20, Id have a full set of 'disposable' wrenches that I dont mind losing/rusting/loaning out/forgetting to pack back up cause we are wrenching in the mud and rain after someone broke something doing something stupid and im ready to get dry and drink beer!

I think the problem with blow molded sets is you end up with some tools you will hardly (or never) use but not get all the tools you do need/want.

I decided a tool bag was a better route. I use a combination of the tool bags built in pockets, tools rolls and plastic boxes for organization.

As for the tools, mine is mostly filled with either older tools that I have upgraded or tools I've found for cheap. One of the best deals IMO are the Kobolt sockets. Yes they are made in Taiwan but they are pretty decent IMO and Lowes always has them on sale or clearance for dirt cheap. There are Lowes stores all over the place so if you loose or break one, they are easy to replace.

Gearwrench make many many socket sets that will fill your need... Good quality, not too
bad prices... Something like the Gearwrench 80714D socket set 1/2" drive has a ratchet,
shallow and deep sockets, plus extension and universal... and they have them in 3/8" and
1/4" and 6 or 12 point and Metric or SAE....

It may be harsh use, but it isn't constant like in a shop. Cheap tools will do fine as long as they have good fitment and won't be rounding anything off. Plus you don't want to be losing anything expensive in the mud.

Maybe one of those napa sets old stock sets or a duralast set. Otherwise pittsburgh pro or kobalt but I don't think they have mixed drive sets. If you mean in the 30 dollar range for a small(er) set. Or you could just buy blow molded cases (for a drill or something) and throw sockets in there. You can get the harbor freight pittsburgh pro sockets real cheap and they're decent for the price; fit and finish is meh though.

Don't laugh, but I think this is exactly what you are looking for. Well, at least the cases are. I bought these years ago (when they were Taiwan, now China), and they're great for keeping the sockets from rattling around. They have/had the "full" set of SAE and MM back in the day.

I generally dont like to use HF stuff beyond very occasional use tools... and these are mostly that, but...
