Hey guys looking for an about 40 Inch tool box that is tall and can easily be transported by rolling into a trailer. I was looking at some of the combos that Lowes offers but wanted to know if there was anything better.

Are you looking to transport this regularly or just to get it home from the store?
If its just to get it home most stores will help load it. The harbor freights that I have
near me will even use a fork lift if needed.
I cant say any loaded 40" box would be easy to regularly get on and off a trailer.

Edit: The Harbor Freight box is great and very hard to beat for the money.

The new all matte black Husky Tool Chests might be worth a look. They already had pretty decent very nicely priced boxes, but were not quite the quality of Harbor Freight's US General, but now I'm not so sure about that. The newest ones are a little heavier gauge, a more durable feeling textured finish, and have soft close drawers rated a little heavier capacity at 120 lbs vs the 100lbs on their previous gloss finish / chrome handled drawer models.

They are not pro chests like snap-on, mac, homak, etc, by any means, but easily comparable to other more costly weekend warrior brands like Craftsman (or your Kobalt). The one I looked at in the store, the whole thing just felt a lot more sturdy than their previous offerings. I haven't bought one yet but I'm definitely leaning that way after comparing with others.

edit: here's a vid showing them off a bit:

+1 for the HF 44".

I live in Montreal. We have no HF stores up here in Canada. I bought mine while I was in NH for business for a week a few years ago.

It is a very good box for the money !

Of course, since you didn't mention price there's always the truck tool boxes, like the Snap-on KRA4107 and the associated top boxes. These come with 6" wheels which will help in the loading and unloading process. But I can't imagine there exists a box that will be easy to load and unload. Certainly not without a winch.

just looked at the husky boxes... they are only 20 gauge steel. the HF is 14 gauge like the snap on's .

I researched and researched when looking for my box and came to the conclusion that drawer layout was #1. I would find a box that would seem like a good box, but under closer inspection, you might find it won't work for what what you want to keep in it. (do you want a lot of shallow drawers or fewer deeper drawers)

I didn't like the Lowes boxes at all.... for a big box store box, if you have a Menards near you, the Masterforce is a very good box for the money... The only negative is they are a little on the shallow side..

Also, the new Craftsman Pro box is a very good box (a big improvement from their older boxes)

I'm not sure what your plans are but if your wanting to transport a loaded box on a regular basis (ie race car trailer). You need to spend some money on a nice box made for the abuse even then don't over load the drawers.

Budget? Constantly loading an unloading a tool box off a trailer is hell on the box. Constantly being trailered over the road is hell on the drawer slides.

That's how my local HF got my 40" top and bottom pair into my pick up. Those suckers are HEAVY!! With just my wife to help me unload it, I uncrated them on the truck and pulled out all the drawers. That made them light enough to slide onto the garage floor. I used plenty of cargo blankets to prevent scratching them up. After several years use, I would buy them again. They were well packed with no visible damage but there was a small ding in the bottom unit, that probably happened before it was packed. I have heard worse stories with HF and other brands, as well, so it is something you just have to deal with. I sure didn't want to take it back and the ding was small.

The Kobalt boxes are junk for the amount of money they want. I have the HF 44 and it's been a good box, but I've already outgrown it. My next box will be 55-72" wide and 25-30" deep.

So you bought a Chinese made tool box, in the USA, and brought it into Canada. Why don't you just start smuggling marijuana as well?!

Other than the Snap-on truck and some industrial suppliers, there are really no great sources for tool boxes up here. Every one sells cheap, ****, thin gauge boxes now. I can understand him bringing a box back from NH.

I know. I'm just trying to be funny.

And what do you think he had IN the box, tools?

I know I was thinking that when I wrote my post lol

And that is the sad truth. Any box in a "big box" store is very flexible. You can easily twist the drawer with one hand, and they move side to side easily and jam.

Another vote for hf depending on how you're loading it. I had a 40" husky stack that I have loaded in & out of an explorer by myself. The hf bottom box weighs more than both those pieces. Another good choice is the homak combo. It's very similar layout & quality.

Another vote for the masterforce from menards. I have a 44 in the shop at work and a 72'' at the farm also a 30'' roller cabinet minus the wheels as a chest in my service truck. so far they have all preformed flawlessly.

Just to clarify OP, are you looking for a toolbox that you'll be transporting often, like in a race trailer? Or just something you can roll onto a trailer to take home?

I think a used Snap on KRA 4107 is the right answer here. I'm a professional dealer tech and have worked out of mine for 9 years everyday with no issues. It's not as nice as a KRL but it's definitely a league above the homeowner boxes you'll find in a big box store. I've considered getting one for home and if you look for a while they can be had for $500-$1000 on Craigslist near me.

That's actually what I have at home. Highly recommend!

Bought it used in pristine shape with a top for less than the Kobalt in the op. :D
