I am looking at doing something similar as OP, however I have 6" to work with in a Knipex 00 19 72 LE holster. I hope to get the kit together before winter ends, as coveralls negate the advantages of tools on a belt holster. I am going with a Grip-On 121-05-489 instead of the Knipex 87 01 125. A wire cutter is a must for me and locking pliers are nice to use for a third hand. Grip-On claims 32mm of jaw capacity, of which I am skeptical of. I am also going to go with a Proto J706. Having an adjustable wrench and a set of pliers is far more useful than two pliers or two wrenches.

I would strongly encourage OP to cut down a 6" as 15/16" capacity is very nice to have. If not the J704 opens to 11/16 and is a nice unit, most other 4" wrenches only open to 1/2". The J704 being American made is definitely a nice bonus!

The Klein next to a Craftsman

That little 4” Craftsman has a huge lobster claw head. I have one and it just looks comical. I also have a 4” red rubber coated handle Klein and it is a super solid well made precision adjustable. It has an actual opening capacity of 5/8” even though advertised capacity is 1/2”.

I like the idea of cutting down a slim 6” adjustable. Gives the user some expanded capabilities at a slight head size size expense. Can’t be bigger than that lobster claw Craftsman!

I went with 4” because at the end of the day the knipex cobras open up to handle any edc type of work

The adjustable is really just a fun thing

In my trunk I have full tool kit with real tools

My kit so far

What are you using for a screwdriver? Is it in the kit and I just missed it?

A maintenance man on the go can save a lot of walking by simply having these 3 tools on him at all times.

I can help everyone rule out the current 4” Crescents AT24VS. Received as a Christmas gift, and the thumb adjuster won’t turn, even using pliers. I guess they forgot hot to make a crescent wrench.

Once you decide on a driver. I would purchase the requisite adapters and extensions and these small sets of tips from Wiha. They come in a little plastic sleeves and you can store a lot of them in a real small space. FYI... The little Wiha driver that they sell was made in China (it was also like $4.00 for the one without the bits). I actually liked the little Kershaw driver better for the last reason he gives in the video below. It too was like $4.00 at Walmart's after Christmas sale (with a cheap knife) a couple years ago.

Love this guys voice. It reminds me of Barry Kripke from The Big Bang Theory.

OR.... one of these smaller diameter bit holders

My set up so far

I have full size kit in my car

I am building a mini kit for my laptop bag

The maxpedition micro pouch is 5.5 max height

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I just got a maxpedition micro after seeing this thread. Its smaller than I thought it would be. I'm using it to organize cords and thumbdrives in my lap top bag.

Good to know. Based on those dimensions, I think mine is a fatty?

In any case, here's a look at it. This isn't really an emergency tool kit but rather just all the "small" tools in my truck tool kit. This sits in a 16 inch tool bag with two tool rolls containing various other hand tools.

Contents: (left to right, top to bottom)

- Assorted generic driver bits
- 3 foot tape measure
- Assorted Pferd American pattern files
- Proto 1/4 drive socket set (SAE 3/16" - 9/16" and Metric 4mm - 14mm) with ratchet, driver and various extensions
- Osborne scratch awl
- Klein Tools micro driver
- Tekton (rebadged Wilde) drift punch, pin punch and chisel
- Cut off hack saw blade
- 6" ruler (actually from a square)
- Empire pocket caliper
- Knipex 6" Cobra Pliers
- Knipex 5" Pliers Wrench
- Klein Tools electricians scissors
- Wilde 6" adjustable wrench
- Irwin 5WR Vise Grips
- Streamlight Microstream flashlight (found in the pocket after I took the picture

Shorten a 6" and clean up the cut. Wider opening than a 4" and stronger. The tool police won't fine you for tool abuse.

I got an 8 inch one and cut the handle off.

I decided to give this a whirl and I cut off a nice old 6” adjustable to 4.5”. Cleaned up the end and re drilled and chamfered the handle hole. Works great and feels good in the hand and pocket.

I carry a 6" in my pocket at work for battery pulls and tiny detail jobs. It tightens loose bits on the bike when riding too. It isnt a bother at factory size at all so no mods required.

But if like the OP it had to fit a small case, no big deal to cut off some.

Here’s some comparison pics of my 4” Irega made Klein adjustable and my Irega branded 4” adjustable. I happened to have them side by side today and noticed the differences. It’s always said on here the Klein’s, Channellocks and a couple others are all Identical rebranded Irega’s. Normally I prefer the original of a tool but in this case I prefer the rebranded Klein. It has a deeper throat, thicker handle beam, opens wider and is generally a tighter more precision tool. I haven’t held the Channellock version.

I can't say enough about the Picquic drivers. I don't have all of them but I've got a nice little heard:

So If we’re talking about a small convenience screwdriver for your travel kit I’ll suggest this. It’s a small, magnetic reversible flat/phillips driver that you can clip to your pocket or put in your kit and the bit can be chucked in a drill and used to drive screws. The handle will securely hold and drive any 1.5” or longer quarter inch bit.
