I live in an old balloon framed house from the late 1800s. It's a 3 story home with a full attic. It has a hip roof with a 12/12 pitch.
The attic was partially finished by someone, probably in the 60s, based on the old wiring and wood paneling. I tore it out in order to insulate and redo the walls.
When I opened up the walls I found some repaired structural damage in the front corner of the home. I assume maybe a large tree hit the house or there was damage from a very heavy snow load. The repairs looks like they were done a while ago. The lumber used for repairs is dimensional. The sistered wood was just nailed into the main rafters. There are no through bolts of any kind.
For the most part, the jack rafter repairs look OK. The repairs extend most of the length of the rafter. I'm concerned about the Hip Rafter. It is 4"x8". It has a significant crack in it. It was repaired by sistering 2 pieces of wood on both sides of the break. The wood used appears to be 2x6s. Because of the proximity to the jack rafters, short pieces of wood were used for the repair. At most, they extend 2 ft beyond the repair on each side of the split. Obviously, whoever did the repair did not want to deal with the jack rafters. Again, there are no through bolts.
I assume it needs to be fixed correctly. I'm having a hard time getting anyone to come over and look at the issue.
Any experts out there. How would you approach this?
