I got a free air compressor from work. I need to replace
the 3 phase motor. It is a 3 horsepower 1740 rpm motor.
All the economical single phase replacements are 3750 rpm.
There is not enough room to repulley it.
Any one have a source I should look at.
3 horse , 1750 rpm, 220 volt, single phase?

Use a VFD, single phase input 3 HP drives are a lot cheaper then a new motor & no derating is required with them, I would avoid "no name" made in China VFD's, as there is very little support for them, there are many people who have sung the praises of dealers like Automation Direct, there are other vendors as well, I bought a couple from a firm in NJ, Dealers Electric & was satisfied with the service.

Unless it's a cheap ChiCom motor or VERY ancient, your not going to find a 220 volt motor made for the North American market, as they are quite obsolete.

I think he suggests using the original 3 phase motor. Is it blown?

Use VFD with the original 3 phase moter is an option but a 3HP VFD might cost close to a 3HP single phase motor.

Also chack the compressor and see if its suitable for a 5 HP motor. a 1750 RPM 5HP is a little more common and more available used. Plus you will have a 5 HP compressor.

If the VFD route doesn't work out, then I agree to repower with single phase but look for good brands on CL:

. . . . . Baldor, Leeson, AO Smith, etc

You'll get best advice from GJ Sparky's if you also post up PIC's of motor plate on the 3 phase motor.

What compressor do you have ?? Post up PIC's.

It's a cheap ChiCom POS motor.

it's better to use a "cheap ChiCom POS" VFD?
You may be buying from a US distributor, but the VFD was built overseas.

Finding a 3hp single phase motor won't be hard, as has been shown already in this thread.

If the compressor will only see occasional usage, then what difference does it make it he buys a cheap China-built motor? It would still no doubt last a very long time under very low usage. If he uses it all the time then I would agree that he should get a higher quality motor.

Grainger does have it, but unless you get a discount they don't use Vaseline. :(

As long as you stay away from off-breed brands, but even a name brand gets their motors from all over, the 5 HP GE TEFC motor on my compressor was made in Korea, but really have no complaints about it & was a good deal at the time, (about $280), & yeah it came from Grainger. :D As long as it is not ChiCom not going to bellyache too much, had good luck w/ Dayton motors until they started sourcing them from China, now unless they are older used ones I avoid them.

maybe a dumb question, but with a higher rpm motor you would need a smaller diameter pulley. why is there no room for a smaller pulley?
Smaller pulley on the motor, or larger pulley on the pump. I have no idea what size pulley is on the motor, but if it happens to be a really small pulley, he probably can't get anything smaller.
