Looking for an American metalwork teacher

Hi everyone!

I‘m looking for an, preferably, American metalwork teacher who, again preferably, teaches young students from scratch/ aka with very limited to no exposure to the trade/ metalwork before they start on such a class.

If we have such a person here on GJ, I would be very happy & appreciate to receive a private message from them.

I have a single, very basic, question, that may or may not require a bit of an explanation (maybe because of the language barrier or because it is so basic it’s completely ‘overlooked’), but I have no intention of asking publicly - I tried in an other place and got ridiculed, made fun of/ treated like an idiot - and I really don’t need that kind of stuff in my life.

Perhaps join the forum linked below. There are many highly respected metal shapers all over Europe that post there.

They seem very respectful of all that post questions.

I am sure many would be more than happy to converse with you in your native German language.

If I could offer, on youtube you should check into Ron Covell's channel. It can be more one on one than you suspect. You can learn a lot by watching a master, having an explanation of what you are doing and how it impacts your work surface, and then going out into the shop and experimenting and applying. You don't have to get it right, you just have to get started and then experience will fill in the blanks.

Fay Butler

Fay is getting older but he is still holding courses at his Shop. Excellent teacher and very knowledgeable. When Jesse James wanted to learn shaping he went to Fay and took his course.

We lost Kent White last year. He was an excellent source of knowledge and a fine Craftsman. (RIP Kent. I miss you. ) Unfortunately when he died his website and business did also.

Peter Tommasini

Peter Tommasini - Classic Car Restoration

Peter Tommasini's an expert in all things vintage/classic car restoration, running seminars on how to become better at car restoration, as well as offering handmade tools.

Peter is an Italian/Australian but he is the finest teacher of the traditional form of metal shaping there is. No one is a better teacher and very very few can do as much as he can. If you do nothing else, get his 1-11 DVD set. With enough time spent watching it and practicing, it will turn you into a shaper. In #'s 7, 8, and 9, he makes a full quarter panel for a Holden Monaro with nothing more than hand tools and the wheeling machine. I promise you if you are serious about shaping sheet metal you will learn how to do so with Peter's DVD's. Best money you could spend learning.

Another truly knowledgeable guy is Geoff Moss of MPH Panels in England. He offers very affordable courses at his Shop and no one knows wheeling like Mr. Moss. A week spent there would set you on your way to shaping anything, and doing it correctly.

There is one Gent here in the US I would advise to stay away from. Won't name him publicly but I will if you PM me. Nothing against him other than it's clear through his youtube videos that he doesn't really have a grasp on the fundamentals. Taking a course with him would be worse than not doing anything because you would have to unlearn the **** he teaches to actually become better or proficient.

Thank you for all the recommendations on classes and video tutors! But I only had a single question that I wanted to get to the right person for answering - and thankfully that worked out like a charm. My question was answered perfectly. I’m not looking to take actual classes or do a full video tutorial.
