I have 24x36 shop with 10' unfinished celings. I would like to add an exhaust fan to the gable on the wall opposite of the garge doors. The walls and ceiling are not yet insulated but on day will be, along with finishing the ceiling. What CFM range should I be looking at? I sometimes paint cars, maybe one every few years and some bumper covers and small repairs, so should I be looking at explosion proof fans? Any recomedndations?

Here is one I found.

It's alittle on the pricey side for me but it's a name i reconize and made in the USA.

I looked for something like that a while back - I believe I searched for "sparkless fan". Thy that and see what you get...

I seriously doubt you'll ever get enough flammable particulates in the air to cause an explosion. Just get one that moves a good bit of air.

If you set your painting up so that you can vent the whole time, the paint/clear/whatever never builds up enough in the air to get close to the % needed to ignite.

Perhaps, but an explosion proof motor won't clog up with dust either. That is a nice plus.

I think I agree that the relativly high concentration of fumes needed to cause an explosion is unlikely but it's better safe than sorry.

Explosion proof is a big thing that requires many things in the system such as sealing fittings, like seen on the conduits at gas pumps and where those conduits enter the building.

I think a TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor on a fan would surely suffice for this need.

Example of an explosion proof sealing fitting- http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/KILLARK-Sealing-Fitting-2MY96

I spent twice that and got the whole booth!

Look for body shops going out of business, may find a good deal. Even when they upgrade to the new super-whiz-bang booths, they need to unload the old one to make room.. many times letting them go for real cheap/giveaway...

Another option is to use a pulley and belt. Take the motor out of the exhaust stream
