Looking for an opinion; Polyaspartic or polyurethane

I have now read so many threads I think I am going in circles. I had decided to just paint my concrete floor and touch up as required however, after degreasing and etching I was not satisfied with the consistency of the surface and decided to call in a pro to get it done right.

All that being said, I am now being presented with two options: a) Polyaspartic or b) 80% solids epoxy with a polyurethane top coat. He is now recommending option 'b' as I will be welding/grinding in the shop and apparently the polyurethane is more durable in that respect (though not impervious as I already know). My question is; is there any disadvantages to 'b' vs 'a'? I am also looking at the long term durability outside of the welding/grinding from using jack stands, dropping tools etc. but also why he is proposing an 80% solids vs 100%?

Thanks,
J

60-80% solids are normally in the primer category. 100% solids especially in a working garage is your best bet and would be thickest and most durable. An 80% coating will shrink in thickness by 20% as it cures.

Thanks for the reply. The quote specifies a single coat of epoxy at 15 mils dft and a coat the polyurethane at 10 mils dft. Is this reasonably durable combination or should I be looking for more?

10 mils for a urethane seems high. Better check the data sheet on that from your supplier. Normally urethanes go on thinner. Just double check the tech data, they could be giving you a 'sell job'. Also 80% solids is tough to lay out at 15 mils dft, again, get the tech data. If they wont supply it or it doesn't make sense, suggest you look for another supplier. If you want help with this get the tech data or the tech data links and email them to us for evaluation to [email protected] Note this string in the email so someone can understand the question and mention Garage Journal.

Once again, thanks for the info Armourpoxy; I will check into the epoxy thickness. As for the polyurethane it appears that I misread the quote. It does say one coat of epoxy but then states "topcoat with 80% solids urethane at 10dft anti slip micro bead added" so I will verify how many coats that is.

Hi,
10 mils of urethane doesn't sound right for a single coat. Seems like some 'over selling' on their part is going on. Get the data sheets!

Sounds like something isn't right here. Either you have the wrong data or your getting "sold".

He did apologize that the thickness of the PU was way off. Apparently he was copying and pasting from a previous quote and got the numbers off. I am now waiting for him to send me the spec sheets.
