I have a Wilton vise (not a bullet vise ) it's bolted to my bench so I'm hoping someone can help identify it without needing to remove it to look for identification numbers. It has a stamp in the casting on the left side (looking at the vise from the handle end) stamp reads 5" jaws 8" opening Made in USA. there's a set of numbers on the right side below the jaws that reads 111102. At 1st I thought that was a mfg date ? But then read Wilton was no longer mfg vises in the USA in 2002 ??
It also has a swivel base, the only other thing I find different about this vise is the screw and handle protrude out from the jaw probably 3-4 inches. I have not saw any with that long of distance between the handle and the sliding jaw. Sorry I don't know how to transfer photo's from my phone to the computer or I'd include one. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Happy !!

Does it look like the one here? Sounds like it has the similar problem too

RTM, the older post you reposted, does look just like my Wilton vise stampings and all ! The only difference I see is as I said my screw and handle extends out further from the sliding jaw ! Thank you !

I suspect that means the clip that holds the dynamic jaw to the screw for opening purposes is broken. You can probably pull your dynamic jaw out so it looks right again, until you close it again, and try to re open.

RTM, I suspect that a broken clip would affect the operation of the vise ?? My vise seems to work flawlessly ?? I had our fabrication guy at work disassemble it clean it up. He also gave it a new paint job. And the tool room guy made a new set of hardened jaws for it !! Both guys charged me a 12 pk a piece I’d say that was cheap ?? I’m retired now so I don’t have those fringe benefits anymore !! I may possibly tear it apart someday and see if it does indeed have a broken clip.? At the moment I’m just trying to identify what model it is, and maybe an idea as to when it was built. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and advice. Happy

Found how to load photo’s ( I think ? ) also side of vise says 5” jaws 8” jaw opening but jaw opening is only 6” screw extends 2” out of the sliding jaw someone said possibly broken clip ? Jaw stops extending when it reaches 6” and is still secure in the body !! Still wondering if anyone knows the model ?? Thank you Happy

Just at a glance the collar that is shown on the outside of the Vise looks like it should be loosened and brought clear up to the Head of the screw (blue arrow) and then hopefully there's one on the inside that you can do the same thing to.

Looks to me like you have a replacement main screw and handle assembly that doesn’t fit too well. Here is a parts breakdown I found for your Wilton 645. It shows the handle retained by a small clip “part #2” that runs in a groove in the cylindrical part of the handle. Yours has no groove so maybe that explains the extra collars we see on the outside and (probably) there on the inside.

The collar that's tight up against the casting - can you see a painted over set screw securing it? Also, can you post a picture of the underside of the sliding jaw where the screw passes through?

When you say that the vise works flawlessly, does the sliding jaw open up when you turn the handle counter clockwise? Or do you have to pull the sliding jaw towards you to open it?

Wow, Thanks for all the input !! What a Great forum. I’ll go back out to the shop today and fire up some heat ( a chilly 9* here in Mich ) But to answer a few questions yes the sliding jaw moves in & out freely using the handle. Also stops when it reaches the end of the threads. Meaning it doesn’t unscrew until it falls out ! I’ll look to see if theres a set screw under the paint on the collar. Vise it bolted securely to my bench. But I may decide to remove it to investigate further. I know this set up is the way it was when I bought it at an Estate sale. A friend disassembled it, cleaned it up and painted it for me. So I have no idea whats inside. I gave $20. for it, but it had broken jaws. Another friend is a tool & die maker and made me a set of heat treated jaws for a 12pk So I feel I have a good vise for very little investment !! As I investigate further I’ll let you guys know more. Again Thank you all for your time & knowledge. Happy

That doesn’t sound like a factory original set up. Every vise I have worked on has the ability to crank all the way out to fully remove the dynamic jaw assembly (jaw tower and slide).
