Hello all,

I was given a 1/2 hp 7" grinder a little while back. I had been using it without problem, until one day i turned it on and it arced. I took it apart and found that much of the insulation was missing from the stator wires. One of the wires only had 2 or 3 strands of wire left holding it together, immediately where it goes into the stator, so it can't be repaired (at least not by me.)

It is a 397.19590. If someone has an extra stator lying around that would be great. I also would like a quench tray for this grinder and another 1/3 hp grinder that I will have to get the number for.

If someone could enlighten me on how to repair the stator, if possible, that would also be excellent.

Thanks,

Byron

here is a pic of the stator. You can see where the wire coming out of the stator only has a couple of strands left. Needless to say those strands broke as I continued to disassemble. I don't know how this could be repaired since it is right where it goes inside of the stator.

I've got this 1/2 hp pre-block carcass. It runs good, but has a 5/8" shaft. If interested, take dimensions of your rotor to see if it will transplant.

Thanks, I will get some measurements for you. Could you also give me the model number? I can't see it in the pictures you attached.

Here are some pics of the grinder (in pieces.) I didn't take any before I disassembled it. As can be seen, it is in great condition short of the wiring problems. I would hate to not be able to save it.

It was given to me at work, as it had been in storage for a long time and we needed to make space. It is mounted to a nice Craftsman (correct me if I am wrong) pedestal, and came with a few older Sears/Craftsman grinding wheels. I was also given an older Craftsman table saw, in pieces, as it spun an arbor bearing and the shaft needs welded and turned to size.

I also snapped some pics of my 1/4 hp 6" block grinder. I got it for $10 from a buddy who picked it up at a yard sale for that price, and then remembered that he already had too many bench grinders.

So the armature is 2.620 in diameter, from outside to outside of the bearings is 7.790, and the OAL of the shaft is 16 1/4 (roughly with a tape)
