Looking for recommendations for a ceiling fan controls. I have a house that was built in 1980 the ceiling fans that are here now I am guessing were added at a later time than it was built as it only has 14/2 wiring, so the wall switch controls both fan and light so you have to manually use the pull chains to do anything other than turn it all on or off. The master bedroom has some sort older controller that is glitchy as hell to bring both the fan and light controls down to the wall.

Looked at Home Depot, Menards, and lowes. Seems like the only options are remote controls or the battery powered face plate things that as basically a remote too. I would prefer something that hard wires in.

I did find a few decent looking solutions on amazon, but they are all tied to smart home type of setups. I would not be opposed to going this route route, I just have no clue which of these smart house systems is the best to deal with.

If you install a Lutron fan control that requires a “canopy module” (electronic module that mounts at the celling), then you can control the fan with the most basic of wiring.

Check out something like this:

Viewing the wiring diagram might make things clearer:

Minka Aire makes one too:

Beware that the canopy modules might not play well with LED bulbs.

Ah yes this is exactly what I am looking for. I dunno why but none of the box stores by me keeps these in stock and they can't ever tell you when they are getting more.

Your first post sounded just about what I would have written.

Our MBR fan sounds like bad bearings and the single switch has got to go. But because of the attic access, I am not interested in adding wiring.

Which smart systems did you narrow it down to so far? My interests right now are being able to smartly turn things off at hours when I know they're not being used, probably on a schedule. A few in the household forget and leave things on.

I haven't looked at any smart system yet, just haven't had the time. Was hoping with this post I would get a couple of recommendations that I could focus in on and do some research from there. With the holiday weekend coming up here soon I have a really long weekend to sit down and figure out what I want to do.

As for the switch itself in the MBR I am going to order one of those Luxtron switches with the canopy module. Not sure what I am doing about the other fan I have to replace. The fan we got to replace it has LED lights and that particular Luxtron switch is not compatible. Its easy enough to find a Luxtron switch that is LED compatible but I can't seem to find that switch with a canopy module. I would have to believe it is more important for the canopy module to be LED compatible than the switch since the module is the one actually controlling it. Yet again I just haven't had the time to do the research to and figure it out.

I can update this post later on after I get everything figured out.
