Looking for Cheap Shed Windows

I am planning to build a 16 x 20 shed. With lumber prices sky high again, I am looking to save money any way I can. There is a local pre-built amish shed company that uses single-pane, single-hung, brown aluminum windows with grids in them that look really nice and seem perfect for my application. The only problem is that I can't find any companies that sell anything like this. I asked the amish shed company if I could just buy windows from them and they referred me to the lumber yard next door. The lumber yard next door said they don't carry them. Seems like they don't want to give up their source. I really don't want to drop $1,000 worth of windows in a $4,000 shed. Has anyone ever ordered anything like this, and if so, where? Thanks!

There is a hardware store in my city that sells and installs vinyl replacement windows. They often put the take out windows next to their trash bin. I would bet that you might be able to find someone in your local area that also generates unwanted windows and will consider selling them for a very reasonable price.

When i wanted to add windows to an old barn I bought single pane wood sashes from Menards. They had a variety of sizes and were well made. I think a 16 x24 was something like $35 last year. I made a wood frame putting two of them together and hinges so they could swing open. I considered making simple tilt in or sliders out of them also. I wanted the windows to weather like the rest of the old wood on the barn so did not want metal or vinyl.

I agree, Habitat for Humanity, though the one I have most shopped-at is more of a furniture thrift store these days.

Don't forget security!

From an earlier thread:
I made some burglar bars for windows in the single-car detached garage, out of square steel stock. I added more members when a particularly-skinny friend came-over, and when I showed him the new bars, he said, "I can fit between those," and then he did-it! I think the only person who could fit between them after the added cross-pieces is T.H.E. Cat (anyone recall that 1960's show?)

My friend welded them up for me from a design I made. One-half inch square steel bar stock, and 2" X 1/8" steel plate, welded.

Since my building is small, I don't have to-worry about means of egress, where the windows were an escape route. It's < 20 ft to the OH door or to the exterior impact-rated door, from any point in the building.

The burglar bars are bolted to the steel framework of the building.

I built my shed with vinyl windows from home depot. They aren't that expensive, you will never have to paint them, and they slide open/closed easily. They have special order windows that were returned/not picked up marked to clearance prices quite often, if you can be flexible on size.
