Looking for cubicle shelving

Ive seen a few threads where people use overhead cubicle shelving for their shops. Any idea where people get them? I cant imagine anybody would buy them new.

I picked three up off of eBay for my shop. Have to say I haven't seen any cheaply since those.

Yeah, they're going for a mint now. I work for the government, and they wont give anything away.

Found mine at a local auction for an office building whose contents were being sold. Got four of them for $2.50 each.

The bad thing is they don't have any kind of back and connect to the uprights of the cubicle wall brackets. I'll figure something out to attach them to a wall, but just haven't had time yet.

If you're going to put them near the ceiling you could build your own custom fit system. It won't be that expensive and you can customize it to your liking.

2 weeks ago a guy had a ton of them on sale here, I thought about grabbing some up. But, no money, and still haven't gotten the house yet, so buying stuff for it doesn't make much sense! Unfortunatly the ad said whatever wasn't gone by Saturday was going to the recyclers.....

look for office furniture , cubicles, desks - any of them might yeild results

Usually when businesses go out of business they may have some sort of a sale I would check that out.

In any major town there will be a business that deals in used office furniture / fixtures /cubicles.

& if you look you can find the with backing plates installed. I'm suprised to hear they are expensive, because in this economy, you can hardly give steelcase furniture away.

Yeah, it suprised me too. Look at the Washington DC area craigslist and or ebay. Its pretty ridiculous.

The ones I picked up were $45 for the three of them and were actually down in the DC area. This was a few years ago. I've wanted a few more of them, but haven't seen them go for less than about $65 a piece. Perhaps getting the first three jaded me and that isn't such a bad price?

I cut the brackets off the back that fit into the cubicle wall frame. That brought the back flush to the wall and there are two horizontal frame members at the top and bottom that I just lag bolted into the wall. Painted them with grey Hammerite paint and they turned out nicely. Have to get a picture of them to post up.

The other thing is that a lot of places want to sell you the whole system - cubicle walls, desks, file cabinets, and such along with the overhead storage.

Wife works as a designer / project manager for one of the larger office furniture installation firms. Some of their contracts with larger corporations require that old cubical furniture be destroyed and not reused or resold. *****.. but at least some of it gets mysteriously saved and ends up in my garage. I have a few file cabinets made out of steel and cherry wood in my office, and I've used the 2" thick work surfaces for my workbenches.

And as far as buying new.. no way.. this stuff is incredibly overpriced..!! Example.. I'm writing this while sitting on a $1200.00 office chair

I was talking to one of my friends about it and he said the same thing. They either get trashed or donated. BUT, they can only be donated to a non-profit
