So i've been looking for quite some time for a good deal on treadmills that I can tear apart for the motor, but came across this today on Ebay.

Baldor Industrial Motor
Direct Current Treadmill Motor
Model: 35P953Z195G3
H.P.: 3.5
Volts: 180vdc
RPM: 2500
ENCL: TEFC
Frame: 182YZ (YZ means custom configured by customer)
Type: PM3548P (Perm. Magnet)
Amps: 16.7
Duty: TRDML

New Surplus Stock. Price: $149.00

As you can imagine, I immediately thought this has to be a scam or something shady was going on. So I called Baldor and a nice lady helped me look up the motor and she confirmed that these motors were made by them, were custom configured for a customer with a 25mm shaft and mounting foot. She said they no longer make the base model on which this was customized, but a current production model that is very similar in specifications would have an MSPR of $3100.

Can anyone give me a solid reason why I shouldn't buy one of them right now? There are 10 available. I think I should buy one for the fact that I more than likely will be able to resell it for FAR more money once this guys lot is sold out.

Opinions?

25mm shaft is probably what keeps the price of it rock bottom. Likely an oddball shaft size, requiring custom pulleys.

Buy a few if you like, as Baldor makes very good stuff.

Check into the price of a controller before you decide of this is a great deal. Make sure that you can get a controller that is single phase. I would also check out the specs on a treadmill motor if you expect a heavy duty cycle. Make sure that it has a torque curve that suits your needs.

that's a lot of horsepower. Wonder how hard it would be to source a power supply for it?

Will it work? Sure
Is it optimal? No and that is why the price is so cheap over new. You'd be better off with a more conventional 1725rpm dc motor and common shaft.

You'll need rather large heat sunk drive to take full capacity out of the motor such as the KBIC.

If I wanted to keep it, I did find some DC Drive controllers that run off 240v which I have in my garage for my welder and they were not too bad used. They started at about $150 for a KBCC-255 Drive which does up to 5hp @ 180vdc.

Well back to the drawing board. I think i may go pickup a NordicTrack treadmill not far from me. They want $25 for it and from what the owner described, it's got a dead screen. Parts for NordicTrack treadmills cost so much money it wasn't worth fixing. The motor is 90v, 2.6hp continuous duty motor that's American made and a controller should cost less than $100 if the one in the treadmill is toast.

Woah... i just realized that NEMA Frame 182 is HUGE. Oh well, looks like I ordered something i'll be reselling once the seller is out of his last 10. Doh!

Naw the 182 is just the right size. It sounds like you need a bigger lathe! FWIW my 13" Sheldon takes a 182 frame.

Wood or metal lathe? Add an old computer or similar fan to cool the motor enough even at low rpm.

25 mm shaft is a monster. I love it. Some more pulleys and counter shaft will help gear you down.

yeah, I like to know which treadmill that was in.

Commercial models have huge motors in them. I just moved 6 of them last week. Many of the commercial treadmills also have AC motors in them.
