Just built a 40x64x14 barn and I am enclosing about 1000 sq ft of it for a heated workshop/office. I would like to have an entry from the cold storage area that I can bring snowmobiles, dirt bikes, atv's through. I was thinking of a set of wood french doors, but it seems that they are all $$$$ and come with glass. Any ideas or suggestions? If anyone has pics of what they did please post. Thanks

With or without glass the insulated steel doors are up to the task.

Ceiling will be 8' in the work area. Standard door height and would like at least 72" width (opening).

Steve, any idea where to find steal insulated pre-hung french doors (no glass). I asked a few places and they wanted $$$ and special order.

The set (double 32"'s) in the picture I posted were on Craigslist a while back for $150. Lowes has them in plain slabs or 9 lite. When they are on sale the double 36 plain goes for ~ $330.00. Maybe that was a scratch & dent price - not sure now.

If I understand right this double door will be inside on the same floor, so you probably don't want a raised threshold (like the prehung will have) to drive over but rather a deadbolt to pin one door at the top and to the floor and the other door to lock to the first. If that's the case why not buy two prehung doors (a left and right swing) @ ~ a hundred each and get a metal Z for between them. I had the so called Z made up for my 36" doors because I was wanting a full 72" open but you can buy the metal strip. I've got one to sell or I can photograph so you can see what it looks like.

I thought about doing RH/LH custom door. Thought it would be easier just to buy one. Yes please post a pic of the Z frame.

Here is a sketch of what my door lap strips look like. I'll add a picture later.

And here is what the commercially available lap strip looks like. It is fastened to the door that is dead bolted when not in use and provides an edge for the swinging door to close aganist. The hole/cutout for the passage door set is really quite generous. The stock number on this strip is W-441-2 70L, if it matters.

A 72" roll up door could also be an option. Under $300 on the internet. But you would probably want to frame a regular man door next to it so don't have to raise the larger door all the time just to get in and out of the shop.

Thanks Steve and John. I will check out the Z strip and the roll up door.

I will also have a man door on a different wall.
