I am looking for a door opener for my shop. I h ave a 10x12 door with high tracks. I would like the type that installs on the wall at the top of the door like you see in commercial buildings. What are they called? Not even sure what to search for.

I have 2 of the Liftmaster 8500's. Love them. One even has the battery back up pack that plugs into it so I can still get the door open when the power fails. (no passage door from outside to 3 bays of my shop)

I use screwdrive GENI openers as the preferred opener for my rentals, they come with a "lifetime" guarantee and their tech assist 1-800-843-4084has been great.

The model you use should depend on the frequency of use. The 8500 or similar is a residential unit with plastic gears. A MJ is a commercial with a real motor and designed for frequent cycles, 6 or so per hour, so it is built rugged. Use that as a guide based on your intended usage. Liftmaster has an excellent commercial line. Good luck.

We have the Liftmaster 8500's on the barn in the picture. They lift a 10x10' insulated door and a 10x18' uninsulated door. The openers run great, quite and very good lifting power. Oh, they also draw very little electric current so you can put a couple of these on one 15amp circuit with ease.

Also have one on the house 8x18' insulated door, used a few times daily over the last two years with absolutely no issues.

Can't speak for the new ones but I've got a pair of geni screw drive openers from the early 80's that still work good. I'd buy another one if I needed it.

I am using a ZAP Butler. It is super quiet. Setup was a breeze, I had it up and running in 45 minutes.

Measure the distance between the end of the jackshaft and the wall. I was considering the Liftmaster 8500 but there was no way it was going to fit without some modifications. The ZAP is slightly narrower.

Another vote here for the Liftmaster jackshaft openers. I have 2 here on the garage expansion and one at the lake house - quiet, reliable operation. High ceilings in both locations made having a "normal" garage opener problematic - these work great.

Mine were purchased a couple years ago here https://weshipgaragedoorparts.com. Their price was good at the time, don't know about today. The units I have are a previous model that did not have wifi or battery back up. I was able to add a MYQ receiver for the house door opener. You might give them a call to see if they have some of the older units around.
