I didn't know whether to put this here or in General Tools. :) And, I did search, but didn't come up with anything useful. :willy_nil

As I get older, I find that I need more light for everything! My shop is reasonably well lit, but I need some good task lighting for things like the drill press and bandsaw. If I find the right light, I think it would also be handy working under the lift.

I am thinking a gooseneck light with a good magnetic base would be just the ticket. There are a few on Amazon, with mixed reviews, as usual! Some say great magnet, next review says weak magnet! With free returns, I can order and try myself, but I thought I would ask for opinions here. I definitely want a 120 volt light.

I appreciate any suggestions.

ETA: USA made would be awesome! Budget is not a huge concern. I don't want to spend $500, but I would like a quality light. I don't need more frustrations from junk!

Thanks for that quick response, jdm5! Some of the lights that you linked to look interesting. I like the Aurora and the Super Nova. I edited my post to add that budget is not a huge factor. I would like to get a quality light. Sometime when you are in the shop and can note which lights you have, that would be great!

Thanks!

OK, I'm with you, I never liked my garage flooded with operating room bright lights.
I have bought/used these lights as task lighting all over my garage/motorcycle lift/re-loading bench.
You can buy them in many different Lumens, they are called sewing machine lights over on amazon and I've bought many different ones over the last year, all LED.

Here's an amazon search:
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=sewing+m...achine+task+,aps,224&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-a-p_1_20

Here's some that I have bought recently:
a 2 pack
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PVFRBXT/?tag=atomicindus08-20

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FSPJKWQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20

3 pack
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088YTQ877/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Read the reviews...
good luck on your quest,
:D

I went ahead and ordered 2 types of the inexpensive lights mentioned above, from Amazon. They have free returns, so not much risk. I appreciate the suggestions!

At those prices, I consider them throw away.

With that, I'll confess to crunching one on my loading press and a few Led's stopped working.
I snapped the cover off and found a few broken wires, re-soldered 'em, snapped the cover back on and it's been 100% since.

I received my Amazon order today. I got this 2 pack as mentioned above for $16.99:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PVFRBXT/?tag=atomicindus08-20

For the price, I am impressed. The magnet is pretty strong, light output is decent, and the light stays where you put it. This seems to work perfect on my Portaband installed in a SWAG table.

I also got this one for $19.99:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012C240BS/?tag=atomicindus08-20

This has a longer gooseneck and works nicely on my drill press. Again the magnet seems strong and the light output is good.

I think the two pack is a better value (duh) unless you need the longer goooseneck. I am going to try one of the two pack lights for a bedside reading lamp. I read a trick of using a can of food as a base for these magnetic lights. If the light works well for that purpose, I can come up with a more elegant mount!

Anyway, thanks for the tips on these inexpensive lights. I probably would not have bothered to try these without the recommendations here. Time will tell how they hold up, but as mentioned, for the price they can be considered disposable.

Can of food for a base, good idea
On my loading bench I used an empty plastic powder container that has a steel cover, put some bullets in it for weight and taped it shut.

These are not magnetic, with a little imagination, one could add one.

The light is sold by JET, it's an accessory sold for the bench grinder.

Great light,
