Hi,

I've been on the lookout for the elusive Craftsman C-98 ratchet with no luck. ran across what I thought may be the ratchet minus the ratcheting mechanism or a prototype or unfinished ratchet or is it an Engineers wrench that has the same exac.t handle as the C-98 ratchet?

In case the picture doesn't show details, it has C-98 CRAFTSMAN Pat Pend. In the handle. The tol is 9 3/4" long and the head spans 1 1/2".

Any educated guesses asto what it may be?

Thanks!

Anyone have an idea what this wrench may have been used for? Not sure if there is a old power tool like a lathe or industrial sized power tool this would have been paired with.

To me it looks like a ratchet without the guts. The handle style looks like it was made by Hinsdale or New Britain.

+1 That is the elusive ratchet my friend. I've never seen one in person myself, just online. If only Sears had the guts for that laying around!

Cool grab on that if only just to have one.

Just found this image of a complete c-98 that sold on ebay and they do look similar and do have the same exact wording on the handle. What is throwing me off is the picure of the ratchet sold on ebay has what looks like a screw just below the ratchet head holding the cover in place and the ratchet body I have does not have a screw hole in this same place. I guess the screw could have been added by the owner and not manufactured that way.

Also, the attached drawings for the patent or other legal rendering of the drive mechanism doesn't account for a screw to hold the cover in place but does show a recess for the cover on both sides of the drive head to flush mount the covers but my tool does not have these recesses.

Indeed. How nice would it be to see one at a yard sale for 50 cents? :)

I wonder if the Snap On versions sell for less.
I think the ratchet adapters use the same patent too.

To the op..
You may not find a Craftsman rebuild kit but with a little patience you should be able to piece together the rest of the ratchet.
