I am looking to finish my garage I need to support my ceiling before I can add additional support to it my garage is 20 x 20. 2 x 4 walls 8 feet high. it has 6 rafter ties unspliced nailed to the wall plate on each end, the roof rafters are 24 oc. my problem seems to be it is only connected to the roof in one spot in the center of my garage by a 1 by 8. where exactly are my support supposed to go I feel like I need to support what is here before I add more, and not sure how to add more with bracing the existing ties are 2 x 6

Not sure exactly what your ceiling looks like over all but maybe some new ceiling joists/like collar ties. Just move them up a foot or so. The shorter length will allow them to fit above the wall top plate.

Doing so, will probably require some vertical support from the rafters. I would think this will support some insulation and a light ceiling.

I just used two inch thick 4x8 sheets of styrofoam sheets..light weight ...white in color so light reflects well & requires no finish work....one day of labor & you are done....mine has been up for 12 years with no problem at all....my .02

Unless your ceiling truss or rafters were designed to support a ceiling then the white ridged styrofoam type insulation might be your best bet

I used Johns Manville Polyisocyanurate Rigid Foam Insulation Board on the ceiling tied in with car washers and construction screws to the rafter joists.
It ain't pretty by no means but it is ultra lite, easy, and inexpensive.
I got a R-10 rating and filled the gaps with duct tape and spray foam from the attic side.

I can keep my 660 squares inside 10 foot ceilings at a constant 55F-60F with a under rated 30K Procom ventless convection heater, during the coldest winters.

It's a little unclear, but it sounds like you want to frame additional support for the roof before you finish the ceiling? Why, is there a problem? What are you trying to brace?

It looks like a hip roof. The 1x8 is not structural, it was a temp board either put there as a prop for the ridge board during construction or another owner wanted to hang something. You have a system of roof rafters and rafter ties (which can double as your ceiling joists). There should be nothing added to connect the roof rafters to those rafter ties below.

The (6) 2x6 rafter ties @+/-36"o.c. are overspanned for 20'. What you should do first is move and sister those ties next to each rafter @24"o.c. Then, depending on what you want for the attic, there would be additional details/substitutions:

For minimal storage (like light decorations only):
1. Add new 2x6 DougFir/SYP Select Structural grade in between so your ceiling joist spacing is 12"o.c. This might "just meet" adequate framing.
2. Scrap the 2x6, and add new 2x8 DougFir/SYP #1 or better grade next to each rafter so your ceiling joist spacing is 24"o.c.

For a little more 20psf attic storage:
3. Scrap the 2x6, and add new 2x8 DougFir/SYP #1 or better grade next to each rafter and then spaced @12"o.c.
4. If you want 24"o.c. you'd have to go to 2x10 Select Structural, but you might have trouble fitting it in at the rafter heel with a low slope roof.

For a raised ceiling:
5. You'd have to look at the existing rafter size to make sure they can still span based on how high you put the ceiling and your region's loads.

If you want sheetrock, I would span the garage with 2 by 6 ceiling joists and add a vertical support in the middle of the building on each one including the existing ones. Put them right beside the rafters and nail to the rafters. That should be enough. The roof is strong and you won't pull it down with your vertical support.

It used to be a trivial matter to buy 20 foot long 2 by 6's, and that would be nice if you can find them. Hard to find today due to Lowes and HD refusal to carry them.

I'd put in a metal ceiling. Have the supplier cut the sheets to your desired length. Then blow in some insulation on top of that. Already painted, reflective and ready for light installation.

The pictures you posted on this thread look different than a couple you posted on another thread a few days ago. One shows joists at every rafter and connected. The other shows wider spacing joists and not connected to rafters. More pictures and wider views would help to give better suggestions. For light storage putting a joist at every rafter and connecting them well to prevent spread would strengthen the roof. Then put a tie from the roof peak to the center of the joists. Just a general suggestion based on what I can see.
