OfI acquired this old machinist's toolchest, it was my father in law's and possibly his father's. I am going to restore it, an was hoping that someone might recognize the manufacturer. No markings that I can see. The only feature that stands out is the drawer bottoms being metal. Ring any bells with anyone?

Divinchi: that box is a KEEPER that is for certain. not only is it a cool well made box it has family history too.

my guess is it's an old Gertsner or Union, but that's just a guess and hopefully other members that own a similar box will see your thread if i bump it up. also i'm pretty sure there might be a name on your main lock so take a look and some close up pics if you see one there.

if my memory serves me there is a box or two similar on this wood cabinet thread i started last year and feel free to post up your pictures of yours on that thread too. here's the link:

treat it right and it might last for you to use and then pass on to your grand kids.

thanks for sharing

Divinchi: i wonder if maybe one of your relatives made it themselves? i guess that since it's so old the name on the lock could have worn off too. if you look at the thread i posted a link on of wood cabinets i'm pretty sure there is a box similar to yours on there someplace and maybe a couple of them.

Every detail feature I can see in the photos is consistent with that chest being the 'common or garden variety' of Gerstner, built in the mid-1930's to mid-'40's.

There are some machinists' chest collectors who have sites on the internet, where photos of the various models of Gerstner chests may be seen.

It looks to me as tho that 'base' or 'riser' box is shop-made, which was a common practice, before the Gerstner works offered the matching 'bases' for their chests.

cheers

If I were guessing, I'd say "Union". Look at the bottom right corner where the front panel meets the groove. If a number is stamped into the wood, it's a Union.

I vote Union.
Gerstners are sometimes marked inside the case.
Pull the drawers out and take a close look.
