I built a new farm shop in 2000, but on occasion will use the old shop for a long term project. I put the no-till drill in the old shop today so that I can do a major overhaul during my spare time over the winter. The old shop has a wood stove and is insulated, but has an 18ft sliding door that gets a large volume of air under the bottom. I am looking for ideas to improve the bottom seal. My first idea was to attach black foam pipe insulation to a 2x6 and **** it up to the bottom of the door, but the foam is too rigid to make a good seal. I am thinking about trying the same thing with 1 1/4" foam backer rod. Thought I might tap in to the vast knowledge of GJ for other and possibly better ideas.

Thanks in advance for any thought or suggestions!

Heavy rubber backed carpet, like the commercial runners in banks or stores, so they block the air and are still flexible enough to conform to the floor and door. May have to use several smaller ones and overlap them. The uniform rental places that rent them out also replace them regularly, so used should be close to free.

+1 on the carpet idea.

The jeans with sand sounds ok but I would get some flat discharge hose and fill with sand which would be tedious but then you would have one long continues snake to seal the bottom and in my option look ok - if you were real creative I think you could plumb air into a discharge hose and have air pressure conform to the under part of door

2x4 weather stripping just pushed up to the door would be good

They make stripping of soft bristle like on a push broom that bolts above tires on trailers that maybe repurposed

Maybe a 1x6 ripped with 45 degree cuts to wedge against door and floor?

Sheet of plastic with magnets to door and board for weight on floor

Piece of angle iron and weather stripping

Large piece of rope - or braid several pieces together to get the right thickness

Old garden hose?

A 4” x 1/2” continuous aluminum threshold mounted to the slab and an adjustable brush type weather strip mounted on the bottom rail of the door might work. The go-to guys for this type of hardware are Pemko, Zero or CRL. They stock a lot of sizes and configurations. good luck!

Thought that I would give a report back. I attached 1 1/4 backer rod to a couple of 2x4s, pushed it tight to the door bottom and used sand bags to hold everything in place. The 2x4s have a 20 degree bevel cut on side holding the backer rod to help push the backer tight against the floor.
It was cold and windy today and I was pleased with the seal.
Thanks for helping me brainstorm.
