I just built a 24 x 41 metal garage, four windows and two 10 x 10 garage doors with a walk in door. I have most of my electrical in place, decided to go with schedule 40 pvc since most of my project work will be small. I do plan to insulate but I just haven't been able to find what I'm looking for. I would like to get some kind of radiant barrier for the roof since it gets extremely hot in the summer where I live. I've looked at foam boards and various types of batts. The metal braces of the building are 4 inches thick.

My preference is a white backed style of insulation since it looks the best. It seems like every board vendor plasters their name all over the back side of their boards and this would be a real eye sore. I do not plan to do any other finishing beyond adding the insulation.

Any recommendations?

Get the white backed style of insulation and paint it.... Laying the sheets out before you put them up won't be too bad to paint or even spraying after you install is pretty easy.

@aggle113, Spray insulation, while probably the best, doesn't look that great. It's very functional, but I just don't care for the look.

@bradpac, are you referring to board insulation? If so, I hadn't thought about that. It's a good idea. Do you have any in particular that you recommend? I would like the best R value for a reasonable price.

Yes, polyiso rigid board insulation. DO a search on CL or Marketplace and try to find it used or surplus for the best price. It is R6/inch.

If taped correctly with thermal break tape, would 2" polyiso provide a decent barrier for heating and cooling? I may at some point pit in a 22-24K BTU mini split. I don't care about keeping temps spot on, if I can within 10 degrees of the outside temp, it will be fine. This building will not be used for daily work but I may engage in a project from time to time.

That's only R12, but it's better than a lot of the climate controlled garages have. on smaller projects I have seen the seams and gaps spray foamed as well.
