Have all the small local independent structural engineers retired? I am looking for a Structural Engineer for a project in the City of La Verne (East Los Angeles County). The project is small. I need someone to do calculations for a shop ridge beam. The structure is approximately 550 sf and my father is intending to keep the ceiling open so the ridge beam will need to carry the roof load on its own (no ties, no trusses). Simple project. So far I am striking out with folks either retired (several), too (busy) big, or not returning calls. Does anyone have a recommendation they would like to share?

Thanks

Several decades ago I built a two story addition to my then existing shop. The upstairs was 24' x 25.5' long at 612 sq/ft. I too wanted it to have an open ceiling/roof and my engineered plans called for a 6 x 14 wooden ridge beam supported at each end by a 6 x 6 post. The ridge beam carried half the roof load and the exterior walls carried the rest of the roof load. Since the county wanted it engineered I used Fox Engineering back then, but don't know if they are still in business. Back in those days, the plan check guys in L.A. County were a bunch of **** heads and only tried to make it more difficult and expensive. Because of that I never took out another building permit and ended up building another 2400 sq/ft shop in later years.
It's not difficult to figure the loads yourself, just find out from the building dept. what the dead load is for the materials, and load capacity for such a beam and go from there. Back then I drew up my own plans and just used the engineering firm to sign off on it and was able to save money by doing the work myself. As I remember back then their fee to double check my calculations and stamp my prints was $440.00.
